having the same problems, I have taken out the thermostat still the same, I drove it at 70 for 4 miles with heaters on and hot air coming out of vents and temp went up to normal, when I slowed down to turn round the temp went up and heater went cold any ideas? or should I start taking the head off?

sounds airlocked, did you top up thru the header tank or the top filler plug (on top of thermostat), was the heater control set to hot??.. I had same thing on mine, cured it by jacking front up a little, or parking front end up a slope, topping up, running engine for 10-15 mins, let it go cold, check water level, and repeat, long winded, but worked, any air came to the front as it was highest point..
Having said that, a friend cured his problem of water blowing past the header cap, by fitting a new one (header cap) as the old one was letting water past at below operating pressure..

if its persistantly gettin air in it, and the heaters keep blowin cold, do the johnny test.
put a condom over header tank with cap off.
run engine.
if condom inflates at all to resemble, well, what it resembles, you have combustion gasses getting into the cooling system.
probable cause head gasket. will just get worse. longer its left more chance of warping the head.
if / when you do the gasket, get the head pressure tested and skimmed.
fit the correct size gasket on reassembly.
recomend a payen or elring headgasket.

presume its the circular thing in the small bore pipe work from header - rad - stat housing?
yes, had these blocked before, does help with getting air out!
