I had the same issue with my `Freelander, turned out to be a seal.

Multiple reasons why there's water in the fish tank:
  • Condensation from lack of air flow through the boot - many years ago this was due to foam behind the wheel arch plastic not being cut back
  • Early FL1's needed a replacement rubber seal round the tailgate which was betterer and solved leaks
  • Take oft and refit the eggsisting rubber round the tailgate and it may solve a leak
  • Check rubber around the tailgate isn't split, ripped or damaged
  • Boot floor split due to crash damage not repair propper
  • Rear boot floor split due to bottoming out oft road causing the eggsauce to whack and split the boot floor
  • Condensation due to not opening air vents or windows when using the FL1
  • Under the rear seats there's a 7 inch diameter circular plate over the fuel tank connections. Drive through water with this missing or not screwed down will cause road spray to get in under the rear seats and fill the fish tank
  • Sometimes get roof leaks but this is rare
If drilling the fish tank floor yer has to rust proof the cut hole. This will allow water to drain out but not fix the reason why it's coming in. I bought my hippo a dehumidifier years ago and put that in to run for a few hours when condensation builds up on the windscreen a lot. Never had the fish tank fill up but many others have. It's a popular problem. Sometimes thought to be caused by a hot eggsauce under the boot area, which is cold and doesn't get much air flow.
Mine never did it, at all, ever ;)

That's because you can drive propper.
I wouldn't say that I've had it up to the bonnet in flood water and knee deep in mud ;)
If I'd been stupid enough to drill holes in the floor it definitely would be quite wet in the tool locker

Had the same problem, turns out that factory only spot weld tray in, so when driven in the wet road spray from below gots in the seem, plenty of gutter seal inside and out around the joint sorted it for me.
