I realise this is part and parcel of owning a Landie Defender, however I wonder if anyone has any ideas?

Water is coming in (when raining!) from the top corner of the passenger door, a fair amount to be honest even in minimal rain. There is no obvious cause, I can't find a crack in the channel around the roof, nor can I see any holes or breaks in the rubber door seal.

Any ideas, does it normally get in there? if so where from and how do you fix it?

Any clues anyone?

have you looked at the sealant between screen and roof? sounds like a problem i've had in the past
 
Thanks, found it, seems I need some 'Dum Dum' putty... Off to the Landie spares shop we go...:)
 
try tiger seal, you can get it from most body shops or ebay. its paintable and super strong. I have sealed my roof before painting and it was a success.
 
Dum Dum is best for plugging leaks as it remains flexible and is applied like putty by hand.... how do you know water is coming in from the top corner of the passenger door?
I would take the rubber seal off the door and you will see gaps on the thin metal frame it goes onto... apply the dumdum to fill any gaps (you dont need a lot) and gently tap the seal back on with a rubber mallet or what ever. See how that goes.
Tiger seal is great stuff but dumdum is easy to work with for little leaks.
 
Put Dum Dum putty as described in the manual around the corner, it said cover with black tape? so I used gaffer tape but I dont think that will last as the water makes it lose adhesion.
Water still came in... so added more and also applied silicone right along the edge of the gap between roof and side panel...water still came in...

Added more putty...waiting for rain, shouldn't be long to wait!

FYI the car is a 2007 in very good condition, so after two hours of checking I can find no other areas it could be getting in, I just don't understand it? Even with the last application of putty I was sure I'd sealed it

Someone has obviously had the same problem as there was already silicone there. Have been all over the roof and no cracks or holes to be found???

If the water is getting in at the door it's doing it in a way I can't find as it seems to come from nowhere.

Thanks for the help, will let yo know after the next rain if it has worked, currently the top of the door is more putty than door!!
 
Gaffa tape is fine, just helps stop it coming away if you take the rubber off again. You still dont say how you know its coming in through the door/roof seal. Use a shower setting on a garden hose so you can sit in and try and see the source.
That door seal should not be leaking now and could well be just the point the water is exiting.... Is it just when parked up or when driving? Could it be coming along the inside of your headliner from another point and then down the top corner windscreen/door.
 
Hmmm...like the idea of drilling a hole in the floor that might just be the best way forward...

That aside I just don't know where else it's could be coming from MrJC, at the end of the day it has to be coming from somewhere higher than the door frame. so the roof is pretty much the only other option, the windscreen looks fine, and I have been over the whole roof...so I just don't get it.
I think I will try the hose on it and see where I get, trouble is I suspect that will still only tell me what I know already...
I think the hole in the floor is the best bet, cheers BOB
 
It's probably getting in through the rubber door seal. Where it clips to the door frame there is a gap that water seeps in through capillary action.
I've had to glue the door seals on with bathroom sealant to get it to stop on my 110 and 90.
 
dont drill the floor as when you go through a puddle it WILL spray you! unless its on the passengers side

First, nobody would believe you.

Second, nobody would reply "me too" as it's never happened to anyone with a Land Rover.

Third, nobody would be able to help fix it as nobody would have experience of the problem.
 
Did you ever tried to go to the service center of Landrover? If not, try now today then ask them about your problem... I'm sure there are the one who is qualified to answer your sticky question... Hope this will help you...
 
Ha...well yes I've made the mistake of not only buying a disco direct from Landrover and then assuming they a) cared about after service b) knew what they were doing...and c) weren't too busy drinking coffee and chatting to answer my question.

Around our way we have Stratstone dealerships who as far as I can tell are filled with blokes that couldn't get jobs at McDonalds...once the car was purchased and they waved goodbye quickly so they could rush down the back with the cheque they then basically never wanted to talk to me again unless I was thinking of buying a new one, which they would ask pretty well evertime I turned up at the showroom.

A bigger bunch of numpties I have never come across...

Bought the Defender from Nene...totally different service, probably the most helpful dealer ever and have been very quick to help on problems after purchase, couldn't recommend them more highly...as for the water leak, sadly they are too far away to drive over and see if they can help..they have offered a advice over the phone but it's basically the same as the ingress manual advice which I am sure (if I can get enough putty) will eventually fix it!
 
i found that by placing a hard plastic type mat from a volvo rear seating area (the ones with the high sides) in my footwell of me series , it would collect the rain water, before i got in i would carefully manouvre the said mat and pour the collected water out, of course while driving along one would still get wet ;)
 
I feel so guilty as my 110 doesn't leak :D but having owned a 90 that did its a pain.

Thinking outside the box and the ingress manual.... I did find a gap in damaged seal by accident with a small torch. Sounds daft but put the torch against the seals on the outside, doors as well and if someone can sit in and see if they can see any light.

I guess the door is a tight fit and flush... what about getting someone to run a hair dryer around the outside door and roof seals and see if you can feel and warm air getting through?

Last daft one :).... is the door so tight that its compressing the seal at the top so it is out of shape producing a gap.

You never did say how you knew the water was coming in through the top corner of the door seal...... do you see it drip or do you just find a puddle?

If all else fails... sell it or take the roof off and start again with poss new seals and a bead of Tiger Seal + dumdum :) My 90 was almost 100% after I did that.
