makes me cringe remembering that as an 18 year old i turned up to collect an alfasud to find it had no steering wheel..... punched 8 holes in a quality street lid, screwed it on n drove home... getting back with a folded in half piece of thin tin.... :0

what a complete ****t!!!!!

agaiin i was lucky but boy could it have gone wrong...
so you knowingly drove summit that was complete and utterly dangerous and you knew it and you still chose to put every other person on the road in danger and you got the cheek to slate someone who didn't know there was a problem..i stand by my statement your a cock

Techy techy. Some times its bad luck. Some time its **** maintainance. All the time its a ****er.

Thank you, Rich.
That happening may have been avoidable, the fact is it was not foreseen.
All of the wheel bearings had been replaced, they had less than 10 hrs use. The MOT has just been done, no advisory note present. It has been in dry dock for some 6 months, I have just spent rather a lot of money getting it back on the road. I did enjoy the morning I did not drive like a weapon. My Children, and WLM youngest had been with me all day, I would not take risks with mine or anyone else's children. My vehicle is comprehensively insured, I have been driving for over 30 yrs.
It happened it has made me cross, I am disappointed with the nasty, small minded comments, these have gone further than banter.
Again thanks Rich, you have covered anything I may have missed.

Surely the Brake pedal needed to be pumped Alot wat way before it looked anything like that! Horrendus noise and handling even at low speed you have signs. Tbh i'm not gonna argue I'm in a good mood but for it to get that bad there has been some serious signs being missed either because lack of diving the vehicle (not driving it often, thinking its ok because it's always been that way) or simply just missing the signs.

Either way it should never get to the point where the halfshaft is supporting the weight and the disc breaks and calipers bolts snapping??? Never heard of that except where they have been fitted by non mechanic way way too tightly with a 3 ft breaker bar stretched the bolts then taken a huge knock I.e hit a tree stump at speed.

Well glad you finally are getting it sorted check your other wheel bearings if they were fitted badly the others could well have been too. 10 hrs use they were fitted wrong or submerged and not checked after.

This thread made me go out and check all my bearings,uj's,prop shaft etc when i got in from work last night. So some good has come from it!.
Glad everyone was ok after that fail.
;)

unfortunately jai you are wrong in this instance.

#### sake I rebuilt an e36 with brand new parts and a Brand new Genuine M3 rear diff went out and drifted for about 2 1/2 laps then went backwards into the barrier. The passenger side wheel bearing collapesed shattering the drive shaft and diff. Got told it was **** maintenance bad fitting etc etc till I showed the recipes and paper showing the exact torque settings used on every bolt on the car including panel bolts.. Sometimes **** goes bang big time for no reason. To the OP glad you kept it straight these truck like to roll good bit of driving. ####ing horrid when you have yours in the car. Ignore pricks who think they would know before something went wrong. One of them then admitting he drove a car with no steering wheel, I would never have done that but then again I grew up round motor racing both 2 and 4 wheels so maybe I was just more aware than most heh? Lol

I will be getting mine checked though.

had it been wading previous to laying up ?you see quite a few greased bearings that have rust pitting at the contact points of bearings by very little water ,such corrosion would take a bearing out quite quickly

I dunno Jai .. both times I had a wheel bearing collapse, both inner bearings, neither time did my braking suffer. Both times the bearings had been checked for tightness and both had recently, one only a few days, had passed the MOT which specifically checks for wheel bearing tightness and brake efficiency. Both times they took my stub axle out, welded the first one, nearside rear, last one was front drivers side and it took out the CV, Stub and a swivel!! ...

**** happens sometimes, no matter what you do ...

Conversely, on one MOT, the brakes were poor, MOT tester said check the bearings, and the nearside front was loose .. loads of grease (Took completely out including CV) loads of cleanliness, just barely loose ... and yet the brakes were ****e, I'd been bleeding them every couple of days without realising. Nipped the bearing up and transformed the ride. Never had trouble (Hah, that's fecked that up) with that one since .. ;)

Just by interest what make bearings were you using???

Was it ****part or Timken ?

I have used both and never again will I use ****part for bearings they are utter shiiite !

For the price of timken bearings i dunno why you'd even bother with ****part personally!

Glad its on its way to being sorted!

I had a wheel bearing go on the rear. Didn't notice untill it calloused taking the shaft with it. Sometimes it happens.

Do you mean to tell me that Landy drivers use their brakes??:eek:

Mine are only used in an emergency or to come to a stop from a slow speed!! ;)

Am I missing something here??:rolleyes:
