It's always a difficult call - even here in East Anglia there's a certain amount of mud about even if it hasn't rained for a while.....
If it's going to cause irreversible damage then yes you did the right thing - always best to play safe. Aren't there any other lanes near that you could do instead?

1 unsurfaced road near work so once a week I commute along it, and 3 in the same area south of teh area I normally drive around. 2 have fords, 1 I have part done to see what was there.
Also not sure of water level and I was on own, but 1/4 mile on noticed a lot of water filled holes which could cause rutting, not small splashes.
