Hi,

Wasn’t sure if I should comment on my existing thread I have re fuel range being displayed but thought I’d do a separate one instead.

Any recommendation on warranties for a L494 3.0 Diesel 16 plate RRS? JLR have said they would have to do an inspection first before allowing me to take out a warranty at a costly £450 which just goes to show how much they believe in their cars 🙄.

Or should I leave it and keep a fund? I am on top of anything that needs doing (will be going for a timing belt and the other belt change in the new year).

Cheers once again

Assuming 450 for a 12month warranty. Doesn't seem out of this world for a manufacturer extended warranty, but is it worth the paper its printed on 🤔 only you can decide ultimately whats best for you financially

Oh no that’s just £450 to inspect the car and see it doesn’t have any faults and then if it passes their tests then it would be an additional cost for their warranty package which I think is in excess of £1000 plus.

Apologies I didn’t explain it well above

That makes more sense. I think you either pay the money and hope warranty covers anything that may crop up or keep a slush fund of, ooooh I dunno...£5000? To cover something big.

But that 5k prob wouldn't get you far if you used main dealer for repairs. So you'd end up having to find a good indy who you trust and who knows the newer jlr stuff to look after you.

Or just run it and if it goes bang in a big way be prepared to write it off financially

Or, as above. Sell it quick as its 7 years old and itching to shìt itself 😅

Well even at 1k a year it is still okay, after all that is only 20 quid a week, 1500 quid is 30 quid a week, in the scheme of owning a newer rr that is pocket change.

I always reckoned to keep my d3 on the road it is 1k a year on parts alone.

From what I have heard with the newer vehicles Warranty Direct seem to be the most likely to actually help out when you need it. But you do have to read all the small print and make sure the the common issues for your vehicle are covered.

I sold my D4 at 6 years old as despite having zero issues with it I always got more concerned the older it got. Suffice to say it was not MOT'd again until two years later. I never heard anything, so don't know if there were issues with it or if there was another reason for it not getting done, but I was certainly pleased to see it gone, despite it being the nicest vehicle I've ever owned! Strange really. Went back to a D2! (actually two D2's and a Defender, so there's always a running vehicle 🤣 )

£1K a year to keep it on the road? Blurry hell, in 14 years I doubt I have spent £3K on my P38 excluding tyres even with a cat back SS exhaust.

Tyres/mot/batteries, everything apart from fuel/insurance in that 1k all included.

This year has been cheap,
2 oil and filter changes 80 quid
2nd hand webasto unit 70 quid
2 sets wiper blades (I am fussy) 50 quid
Handbrake shoes 100 quid
Top knuckle bush 20 quid
Fuel filter 25 quid
Transmissions oils, 75 quid tfer box oil alone is 50 quid.
Diff seal 10 quid
Just had to fit another new Conti tyre as I tore a chunk out of one of last years new ones!

Last year 4 tyres and wheels refurb 600 quid
Torque converter rebuild/oil and filter 1550 quid

So what I have saved this year I had already spent last year, never mind the usual oil/filters/wipers.

i have my timing belts that will need doing in the new year. Assume that isn’t covered under warranty?
I doubt it as that is a service item, that will be 1k plus in a dealer, they would probably insist on new belts as part of issuing the warranty.

Good quality parts are not that dear, and the job is not that difficult, I have done my d3 cambelts twice in the 9yrs I have owned it, (same set up as 3.0 apart from 3.0 rear belt is timed) plus more stuff to remove for access on the 3.0.

I have it booked in for the new year for both belts. Quoted around the £650 mark all in which I thought isn’t too bad.
