Hello,
Recently purchased 2000 vogue. Went for one with as low miles as possible and FSH. Studying the various forums reliabilty seems to be a hit or miss affair. Does anyone know of, or recommend a used car warranty thats worth the paper its written on. They all seem to have a wear and tear clause, and the nature of any component failure could be attributed to wear and tear! I'm a member of the AA and have their £500 contribution warranty. I'm heading towards sticking with that and putting the cost of a warranty(approx £600) in the bank and using that as my "fixing fund" But looking at some of the experiences of fellow owners £1,100 could fall well short of keeping one of these complex motors on the road. I would be grateful to hear if anyone has had a good experience with a warranty company, but I fear Range Rovers are too complex for such insurance to have any use at all!
 
When I bought my car I got a Blackhorse warranty, which seem to come in different levels of cover, and as part of haggling on the purchase price I got the top end one. So far I have had an air suspension fault fixed and when the radiator sprung a leak from a small crack in the plastic base, they were happy to deal with my local independant Land Rover man to take care of it and authorised the use of genuine Land Rover parts too. I have no complaints whatsoever so far!

That's how to keep a RR on the road. It's not cheap, but if you scrimp and scrape on getting things checked, they tend to build up as bigger problems and become costly.

Find a reputable local independent LR garage and get it checked over. Dakar Cars near me says they charge £350 for a bog standard service and about £450 or so for a premium one.

Getting a testbook done, is a fairly good way to find potential problems.

Also, there are many high quality aftermarket parts available for LR's which are equally as good if not better than official parts.

Ensure certain parts are replaced, such as a heavy duty battery, replace the original 80amp alternator with an uprated 120 or 150 amp one and on the P38 definitely replace the RF receiver if that hasn't already been done.
 
Thanks for the advice, not sure I can get the Black Horse warranty as I didn't buy the car from an approved Black Horse dealer, which is a shame as it sounds like its worth having.

I've got an independent LR garage checking the motor out next week, came with a 3 month warranty(for what thats worth!) Hopefully everything should be ok, serviced once a year by LR main dealer since new, plus the odd additional visit for repairs, also main dealer, all bills and invoices came with the car. Independent recommended by a friend, so should be ok. Had a company Disco 3 for 3 years, always in the garage for 1 repair or another! Main dealers didn't inspire confidence.

I know these cars cost more than a ford fiesta to maintain, and I won't be scrimping on repairs and servicing, I was just trying to find some additional insurance for those "big" repairs that may be lurking around the corner.

The problem with warranties as most people will point out is that unless they are from a main dealer and you WILL pay through the nose for it believe me! they tend to be very expensive pieces of loo paper.

When something major goes on the car like the BECM or the engine for example, these so called extended warranties never cash out on major work or parts and only make a small contribution to wards the total cost.

Some waranties also only cover cars up to a certain number of years. Mine being a 1996 means any warranty I wish to fork out on will be extortionate in price.

All in all, the only way to test the waters is ask your solicitor to look at it! No really, the legal mumbo jumbo on some means YOU will be paying the bill not the warranty company.
