Hi all,

My ‘03 Td4 has been playing up again over the last couple of days. It blew a headlight bulb the other day, so I have since replaced both with some Halfords “150% brighter” ones. The next day, the three amigos appeared and the brake light is stuck on, so I have ordered a brake light switch in the hope that’ll cure it (the old one seems to be completely knackered).

Since then, the three amigos have disappeared, but the brake light is still stuck on (I know I shouldn’t be driving like this but I don’t really have much of a choice at the moment). However, when I’m driving, the three amigos, as well as the green HDC light, the handbrake light and the engine management light with the exclamation mark flash on then immediately off. I haven’t noticed a pattern of when it does this, as it can be fine for a while and then do it three times in the space of a minute, but it does only seem to be under acceleration although there doesn’t seem to be any loss of power. I should also mention that I have tried the HDC and it works perfectly.

Before I have to go and get a second mortgage to have the codes read, does anyone know is this could all be related, or whether the brake light is a separate fault - and if they are separate, what the lights could mean?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi,whereabouts are you in Hertfordshire (not exact location but nearest town would do)? I have a Foxwell scanner which will read most stuff if your not to far away, let me know.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that offer, we’re in Hemel, so if it comes to it and we are close to you that’d be great. Someone else has said that the brake switch will definitely fix it, so I’m waiting for one to come in the post and will see what happens from there!

It might just be a case of adjusting the brake light switch.

Thanks Col, I’ve just had the switch in pieces and cleaned it all up with contact cleaner but no luck there, some of the contacts look fairly worn out so I’m assuming that’s the issue. Before I completely write this switch off, how would I adjust it correctly?

Now your asking. Its been a while since I had my freelander, I had the same trouble with the warning lights. Mine came on when I braked, if I stamped on the brake peddle very quickley they went off again. I remember fiddling with the switch and that stopped it but I cant remember what I did exactly. I think I might have just bent the bracket slightly.

Thanks both, I took it for a drive a while after stripping it down, and the silly thing started working again, no warning lights whatsoever. I’m going to fit the new one when it comes so I can forget about it for a while!

Hi, hopefully the switch will fix it but let us know & we can go from there (I'm near Baldock).
