Hi all,

I my quest to rid my car of its tramlining/wandering I am going to try a set of 16" wheels and tyres to see if this helps the problem, as I have read it may well be as simple as changing to a 16" wheel!

I have cash waiting to buy 16's with good tyres if you have any.

Or I may swap my existing 18" hurricanes, which have Cooper tyres on.

Can sort out pics and exact tread depths if anyone is interested.

But if you have a set of 16's with tyres lying round then let me know, I can arrange courier so thats not a problem.

Thanks

An opinion: I've got 18's on mine (which doesn't tramline) and also want to get some 16's - not to fix a problem, so I can take it off-road with some decent off-road tyres. I also recognise that the 16's are probably the better all round wheel size for a P38.

I doubt if the wheels would fix the problem as other Rangies with 18's aren't afflicted. Get 16's by all means, but surely it'd be better to actually find the faulty/worn component and sort it rather than hope to mask it with 16" inch wheels?

Cheers,

Malcolm

Yes, sorry a P38

I agree, finding the worn part is the best course of action. But I am getting fed up with it.

All I have done for the last 2 days is read countless posts on countless forums about this poxy problem which it seems a lot of RR's suffer from.

Yet no one seems to have a solution to the problem. Very annoying as it is destroying what is essentially a perfect car!

I've got a very nice set of 16" P38 alloys sitting in my lock up.
They were on my Rangie until I changed to RR sport alloys, and can
vouch for the fact they gave no vibration.
The 4 alloys have very good tyres, all Pirelli Scorpions I think
with plenty of tread, plus there is a steel spare (not much tread).

I have been meaning to put them on ebay, I will have to watch

If you're interested, PM me.

Mike .

Our P38 used to tramline on 18's was better on the 16's

but when it went for MOT the bushes on teh two front rams that come from back to front under the axle were shot changed them to poly bushes what a difference,

Have also just changed top and bottom ball joints and it drives even better again,
No tramline on either 16's or 18's

would suggest get it on a ramp and have a look at those, bushes not too bad if you have access to bottles and a press

ball joints are a bit of a pig, again bottles required both to remove ( had to burn mine out)

and refit had joints in freezer overnight and then warmed axle casing up and they just dropped in

Good luck

Thanks all for the offers.

I have purchased a new set of 4 16" allow wheels off eBay at a low price, never expected to win the auction at that price. I will have to get new tyres put i was going to replace them anway.

Thanks again for your help chaps :)

Thanks for that inforamtion.

I will be chaning the radius arm bushes, but not sure if I should go Poly bushes as someone has said its a bad idea. But you seem to be happy with the Poly bushes? Which ones did you fit?

Interesting way of doing the ball joints buy putting them in the freezer, would never have thought of that!

I have seen a few photos over on the American Range Rover forum and they seem to be able to buy a kit for removing and replacing the ball joints. Apparently you dont need to align the drive shaft afterwards either, if the collet is left alone. The aligment of the shaft requires the use of a special tool.

Poly bushes are a lot easier to fit< had to use a press to get the old ones out and a gas torch

refit poly was tyre soap, job done

Running on orange coloured ones from Famous Four they don't list poly for the P38 but they do sell them

re ball joints, make sure you do both top and bottom at the same time, job was not too bad but we have a ramp with an air jack which makes things a lot easier.

wheels off, undo track rod ends, brake calliper 2 bolts, 4 bolts hub off with drive shaft still attached, may need a hammer to move it for a start.
watch out for ABS sensors< i broke one of mine £100

then get stuck into the ball joints

freezer helps keep the ball joint cool and means you don't have to heat the cast axle casing quite as much

Good luck if you need any advise give me a PM

Again, I appreciate all of your valued input.

The car is going to Devon 4x4 to be sorted as after pondering for a while I have come to the conclusion that I cannot carry out the work myself due to lack if correct tools.

New wheels and tyres going on today so will report back about the difference these make.

Cheers :)

Good luck with the work

reckon P38 you need some mechanical knowledge or some tools and the internet to get help from on here

or deep pockets

mine would have cost a fortune if i had someone else do the work, but father and brother in law are well handy on the tools which is useful when i get stuck and we have a big ramp which helps a lot

Yes, this forum and other Range Rover forums have been very helpful, as with most automotive forums, they are invaluable when it comes to solving problems etc.

I have some mechanical knowledge so not completely in the dark!

I have updated one of the other threads with regard to the ride with the 16" wheels and tyres on. Ride is improved but new noise has strangely appeared. See HERE
