Hi

I just bought my first Range Rover last weekend and find the steering is constantly having to be corrected.
I imagined it would have been solid on the road but actually find it wallows quite a bit.
What should I be looking at to remedy this as I find it a bit disconcerting, I've dreamed of owning a Range Rover for many years but have to say the vague steering kind of puts me off.
My Range Rover is a 2001 4.0 HSE with 97k mls.

What wheels/tyres? Very sensitive - get it right and its a joy.:welcome::search:

Hi,
I think my wheels are 18" Hurricanes shod with 255/55HR18 Michelin Latitude Cross tyres.
The tyres have only done 5k mls and are properly inflated.

Whats the pressure? I run 30/31 psi front, 33/34 rear, not the 28 38 in the book but i feel it works very well, some swear to 28 all round not loaded with cargo/passengers (Datatek).
Search for steering box, tyres or damper, it has been covered many times - not the google search, little down to the left is the forum search

I tried something like your setting and I felt the car "Heavy" while using Range Rover's setting the car felt light when steering. What about you?

Loads of people have had the same issue and eventually corrected it, have a search. In summary...

Tyres - make and inflation. Pirelli complained about a lot, not sure about yours. Ovalandrover has the same as you so could ask him. I went from Pirelli to General Grabber AT2. Balancing MUST be spot on or vibration will be felt at around 55 mph. I use the book pressures 28 front 38 rear.

Steering damper - replace with new OEM.

Front radius arm bushes - worth trying if still having issues. I went for Polybush Blue, not as harsh as Red.

18 inch rims are more susceptible to issues than 16 but it is solvable.

Ive done about 1000 miles on my lattitude cross and dont have any problems with tramlining but did with pirellies and also run 28 front 38 rear on 18 in hurricanes so I dont think it will be your tryes.
Look at track rod ends and steering damper also is the steering box centered?

Steering box setup is also critical. The box needs to set up with the marks aligned .

Recently forum member fixed the same problem after 9 steps. I cannot post link in here but search for "Death wander". Thread was started 27th-March-2012, 20:38.
It is possible to fix it. Good luck and keep working.

Hi and welcome.
Mine was deadly at first and wandered and dived all over the road on the slightest bump or camber.I now run tyres at 28fr and 30r and have replaced various bits, all cheap, and after adjusting the steering box and centralizing it, the car drives beautifully!!.If you are handy with the spanners, for a little cost all the steering wander can be corrected easily and is well worth the effort for the final result.Check the drag link for wear and the steering damper as these can make a lovely car feel like a death trap.

Thanks guys, I'll hopefully get it on my friends ramp soon and have a look around for anything obvious.

I had the same problem I did all sorts. I changed radius arm bushes. new steering damper and a re-con steering box it drives sweet now :D

My 2001 DHSE on brand new pirellis (zeros i think) wore them out on the outside edges in under 4,000 miles. Car was tramlining on nearside lane of motorway in particular, where rutted by lorries and awful to drive, constant correction needed. I took it in to a good local independent tyre specialist who did a 4 wheel computer wheel alignment chack and reset, it was out by quite a bit, and fitted grabber AT2s and it drives like a new car 6000 miles on. JV-ROVERMAN in Enfield. If anyone wants to know the tyre specialist, it was Farm Tyres on Sewardstone Road, Waltham Abbey/ Chingford area.
