When loading the roofrack and walking around on it i have to be careful to balance along the bars all the time which is a pain, I was thinking a large lattice grid across the rack would give a solid area to walk over... and was thinking the kind of stuff waffle boards are made from would be good for this, though maybe not quite as thick...

Anyone know if this exists and is possible to do? Or any other cunning plan? I don't want to just ply it - it's a nice shiny G4 expo roof rack on the new 110, so, it looks sweet at present, just want to make it a bit more practical...

You can get wire mesh to go over your rack, I presume its pretty tough stuff! I know of someone who makes custom racks (its where I got mine) , he might be able to help you out.
I can send you a link if you like.

Thanks, yes if you've got a link that'd be great

or use waffle boards, then you got them as well, dual purpose like :)

I'd need a lot of waffle boards to cover the whole rack, they're not exactly cheap, and are a bit thick for the purpose.
Also, in the 6 years of laning to date, I have never, ever required waffle boards, I really don't think i'm going to need them on a shiny 110 which is only going to do light laning (until Iceland next year, and, then, yes, waffle boards maybe needed!)

That ammount of waffle boards is going to be pretty heavy. Not going to do a lot for your fuel consumption carrying that much extra weight.

Weldamesh grid be what ya want. I picked up enough second hand to make a 5 by 8 by 4.5 ft mesh side trailer recently for £15.

Yeah i was thinking of waffle board type material but a 1/4 of the thickness...

Safety Devices do offer a marine ply solution... would rather not use weld mesh if possible, i'm familiar with the stuff and have used it in various applications, but, i just don't think it would be right for this job for me...

Howsa bout the cheap, cheerful idea of Welsh waffle boards.....

Bread baskets - found locally round the back of small shops/supermarkets unloved and forlorn.

Get a few - hot bladey thing to trim the 'excess' sides off and voila. Light, yet fairly strong.

a mate used a lump of harris fence, as found round a building site

on the van I have a length of 12" cable tray down the centre for walking on. (inverted and slots cut out for the bars) its a bit bent now tho

Mesh will have to have plenty of fastenings to be strong and a good lick of paint to look good

How about some lager shoes
