He everyone, newbie here :)
Mum's had a W plate TD5 Land Rover for 4 days, and now it won't start!
Fob will lock/unlock doors. Once inside the red flashing light on steering cowel/dash flashes very fast, and key/ignition won't turn.
Tried 2 known working keys, both give same symptoms.
Please help me help my dear old mum!

Can't say I have any experience with the TD5 but I was told that the light flashes according to the condition. I assume the fast flashing is a fault code.
I was also told that you can emergency override the immobiliser using the ignition swith but you must have the code number. I can't promise this will work on yours but will try to explain best I can. Assuming your code is 54021. each number is entered individually. turn your ignition on, the light should remain on steady. (if it doesn't then this method may not be the one for you)turn the ignition off. the light should start flashing again. count the number of flashes. when it reaches 5 turn the ignition off again. the light should be steady again. turn it back on again and this time count 4 flashes then turn it off again. with the number 0 you count 10 times. repeat the process until all your code numbers have been entered. If you mess up, switch on then off again, leave for at least 15 flashes then start over again. after the last number it should work properly unless of course this is not the way to override your system in which case hope someone else has the answer or contact a dealer who may have to reset the ECU

Thank you for the reply :)
When this light flashes like mad, the key won't turn in the ignition.
Recovery bloke has just been, and got it working on one key but not the other.
He did say key would only go in one way - maybe explains why it wouldn't turn; although the number of times I had the keys in and out, can't have put them both in the wrong way every time?!
New one on me that.
Cheers.

If you have the handbook, page 15 describes the various conditions when the light flashes, from what you say, it could be indicating a low battery in the key (handset).

There is no mechanical type immobiliser that stops the key turning, I suspect that you may have a worn ignition barrel - give it a squirt of WD40 and see if it helps.

As described by donboon there is a procedure to manually enter a code, should be in the manual pages 18 and 19, if you don't have it I can email you a copy of the pages.

Thanks for reply :)
Both keys had enough power to repeatedly lock and unlock, that's what confuses me. If it wouldn't unlock/lock doors would see it as being a 'total' fault with the batteries or something.
Will have to look into this manually entering of code.
Not really had a look round the thing properly, about time I did.
Cheers guys :)

The light will give you quite a lot of advance warning regarding battery failure in the key, they continue to work for quite a while before the battery gives up.

just a little word on the fob battery...

When we bought our disco (Private sale) the guy threw in a fob battery, Branded Land Rover and packaged on a land rover card. Probably re-mortgaged his house to buy it!

It is a common battery and is the same size (CR2032) as the Bios Battery in most desktop PC motherboards, and therefore cheap as chips off any internet battery supplier.

Have you been near to a mobile phone mast? it can play havoc with the imobiliser. Locking and unlocking the car in quick succession can sometimes work, if not entering code using the key in the ignition will reset the imobiliser.

Sorry guys, may seem a bit slow here...!
So battery low can still open doors, but not un-immobilise it?
Not sure if was near a mast.
Tried locking and unlocking quickly etc.
Thanks for your help, is very appreciated :)

Remember though that if your key wont turn in the ignition (as you say in your original post), its not an immobiliser problem. If the immobliser is 'armed' you can still turn the key but the car won't start. If your key or ignition lock is sticking, your problem lies with the ignition lock.

One of the functions of the led light is to warn of low battery in the key, when this happens the light flashes rapidly when you unlock the doors but the remote lock/unlock function will still continue until the battery is flat.

The immobilser operates from a chip located in the key, when the key is placed close to the ignition, its signal is picked up by a sensor in the steering column area and it de-activates the immobiliser. This function would continue to work with no battery in the key.

Great stuff.
So it seems that the battery in each key could do with replacement, and some form of grease and jiggle for the barrel.
2 unrelated problems then. Seemed like a good safety feature the key not turning, but it's a fault...
Cheers :)
