hi mates..need some guide on how to uninstall and install a new viscous unit/fan clutch of my disco 300tdi...please throw me a lifeline at the end of the world here mates...here nobody uses viscous and they never heard of it ..mmm

by the way, remember the problem with my engine cutting off when put to Reverse(while a/c running)....ive increase the rpm(now about 1020rpm)while on idling without a/c.....with a/c idling speed is about 975rpm...at first the problem seems have been resolved but unfortunately its not,it died on me again!....:(

So im thinking like this, the a/c makes the engine load more than usual which it could not sustain due to the insuffient cooling when a/c running especially on idling speed/slow speed like traffic jam or...on reverse!...so my next apporach is to change the viscous unit if its makes any difference....maybe its falling apart i guess...

therefore, anybody with experince changing this unit, please kindly help me out here.thanks a lot :)

Does your car have EDC , Electronic Diesel Control , because if it does you are looking at the wrong area . EDC engines automatically increase the idle speed when the Aircon is switched on to allow for the extra power needed for the faircon compressor and electric fans . The viscous unit / fan clutch is a Left hand thread so you have to use a thin and angled spanner and turn it clock wise to un do it ( I think it is 32mm). It will be vey tight and you will have to use something to lock the pullies in place ie a screwdriver or spanner lodged in between the water pump bolts .In your area you risk overheating if you run without it so If I were you I would leave it on as it should not make your engine stall . I think you have another problem I just do not know what is causing it. Regards Jonathan

thanks a lot Jonathan for the very good input.Talking abt EDC,my 96 300tdi auto think should have one of those rite?hopefully..i myself have no idea where to look for it!

The problem is everytime i switch on a/c, the idle speed comes down not go up???why is that mates??

now back to viscous unit,so i must never run her around without the viscous unit rite especially in this hot climate region?ok now im running around but i dunno whether the unit is functioning well or not..?? how can i check whether its working properly or not??

please advise, thanks.

ng has an edc pump to save trawling thru the other thread.

for the viscous unit, when engine is cold and switched off, the fan should turn reletively easily. (as tho you can describe reletively in words....maybe the same force to turn the inside of a washing machine?)
when engine is warm, there sould be more resistance to turn the fan.

if when engine is warm, you rev it from under the bonnet and the draught increases to a small propellor plane force, its probably working ok.

dont run around with it off, or you'll be doing another head again.

thanks NRG for useful info.Ive checked the fan just now and its not turning easyly (it turns but with some push)so i guess maybe its not working well.so got to wait for the unit to arrive from UK.

But rite now the problem has gotten worst!!...i couldnt start the engine at all!...i dunno why..yesterday was ok...i came from work and park at the porch around 6pm local time and this morning it wont start..so now at home (AWOL)trying to figure what went wrong and how to solve it....

ive checked batery ..was ok..got crank....i checked lift pump..even bleeding it no problem on that but still no joy!....what else should i do mates ...please pass me some tricks or magic to make it run again...

hi mates..after further researh on the net ..i think its maybe the immobilser...so i guess i need to bypass the system...what u all thik about this..?? well just wana give a try n see what happens..but i duno where is the solenoid located...can somebody pin point the location of it...thanks a lot

If its the fuel stop solenoid that you are after its on the diesel pump. With a wire coming off it. Can't remeber if some have one wire and some have 3 wires thou. There is a bypass kit that you can buy from landrover. this should be the p/n for it:p/n is AMR4956

thanks Alex, dont have time to buy the kit from UK...so i got to do like Mcgyver..well if thats possible to be done on my own..lets see since im still stuck at home..mmm..ok now ive checked the fuel pump..the solenoid sits on top of it with 3 wires right?
another question is where is the starter solenoid located ??

By the way,is it possible to bypass immobiliser on 300tdi AUTO using manual method ie connecting wire to ignition and all the stuff??

if i didnt manage to do it own my own say and im stuck...then ive got to still order the bypass kit from UK..so after getting it where should i fix it into...??mmm:confused:

your solenoid is integral to the pump. it can be reached by dismantling the back end of the pump, but ive never done this. there is a thread on here about it somewhere. unsure as to what happens to the other 2 wires, but i beleive they are to do with an electronic advance.
i will try to find the other thread and stick a link to it, but unfortunately its out of my depth at the moment.
there was also a thread about repairing the spider (apparently they suffer dry joints, and could be the cause of the original problem). if it still spews diesel from the injector pipes as you say in the other thread, i cant see a reason why it should'nt start tho.

i will be here in the background while i think on it.

edit- if the fan was hard to turn, its probably ok.

thanks nrg...the fan not ok i guess coz the turning at warm or cold engine is just the same...

and the latest info i got is that my landy is a non edc unit but with auto gearbox...so can bypass the immobiliser rite but how exactly..??..will be waiting for your input and anybody who knows abt this problem..thanks mate
