The fan sucks cold air through the radiator and blows it on to the engine making it slower to warm up. Ya dig ?

Is there a how to on removing the fan somewhere? Also how can you run it without a thermostat, is it blockable?

you should never run without a thermostat, the engine would take an age to warm up...and you can't block it.

to remove viscous fan you should just need the correct cranked spanner, the fan should be a reverse thread as well

On a TDi it's a LH thread so to undo the fan you need to turn it clockwise;

On a TD5 it's a RH thread, so to undo it you need to turn it anti-clockwise;

Sorry just thought about that and relised it was a stupid idea lol.
Gonna take the fan off and leave it in the boot for now. I will be doing a lot of heavy towing using my car trailer, but if it causes a problem i'll just get an electric fan.

Good idea, I took mine off (200tdi) years ago and fitted an electric fan which I've only used a handful of times when stuck in traffic on very hot days. Benefits are all as stated by The Big Lad at the start of the thread.

You're really not likely to need it this time of year - for now just do like you said and keep the viscous one in the back with the spanner to refit it just in case.
The fan I fitted was an old Ford Escort one with it's shroud modified to fit and a switch under the dashboard - on the odd occasion it's got too warm this has cooled things down fine. I'm just about to fit a temp switch in the radiator ready for the summer.
