Gonna remove the viscous for the winter , the 300TDi does take a while to get to temp so I want warmer air quicker ........ I'm getting on ya know :D

Anyone else done this ? Also my heated front screen wont opperate if the rear demist is on at the same time ?? Is this bloody normal or a Disco feature built in

IMO..go for it without emotions...then get hold of a leccy fan and a termo connector untill summer and put that back instead......one of the best things i did to my disco is that i got rid of the viscous unit.

I take it things warmed up a little quicker ? I hope so coz the older I get the nesh I'm gettin .... brrrrrr .........

I have a 200tdi and just had a similar issue with car heating up. I covered the whole front of my radiator AND took off the fan, my temp gauge shot up to half way on short journeys and went 3/4 on motorway! I put fan back on and my temp gauge now sits just under half way and heats the car up in 5-10min. So my advice would be to muff the radiator and see how that goes first.

I dont think this one will help u to get warmed up quicker coz the viscous unit kicks in just when the engine is warm...but it might start easyer, run better and gain some mpg.....for quicker warming up try tisthymonkey's tip....or retrofit a fuel burning heater(that's not that easy nor cheap)

Think the viscous must be buggered as it blows all the time ........ still its coming off anyway and I may just plug the muffle the rad too .......... cheers guys

took my viscous fan off last winter-have not needed it at all this year (in boot with spanner)just in case

last august i bought my first d1 300tdi manual i remover the fan straight away as i fitted a de-catt pipe and egr valve kit at the same time, anyway as i sold the d1 to a mate due to me buying a d2 td5 auto and buying a static caravan in cornwall when we where going to the caravan for the first time since buying the caravan prior to us going the d2 packed up so whilst it was in the garage i borrowed the d1 off my mate and drove to cornwall in it with the fan and spanner in the back just in case, anyway we where going well then when we got close to taunton dean services we got stuck in a traffic jam for 1/2 an hour and whilst we where in the jam the temp gauge started to rise and managed to get to the services and fit the fan i was very pleased with the d1 so once the d2 was fixed i sold it and bought another d1 but a 300tdi auto and have removed the fan but plan to refit just before we go to the caravan just in case then remove it afterwards it only takes seconds to remove and refit and does seem to give a little more power when the fan is off.

Think its defo coming off now . I do tow a large caravan in summer so will just leave it in the back of the Disco until summer ...... I have removed the egr and cleaned the inlet manifold too . The intercooler was quite new and did'nt need any attention either . was gonna de-cat it but the exhaust was looking quite new so left it . may have another look later next year

yeah i know it was wrong to do but i didn't want to cook the engine and decided to drive the last hundred yards up the hard shoulder onto the services and when we got into the services the temp gauge did start to drop but it just worried me at the time of what could have happend but once i was over it the fan came off a gain and as i say it only takes seconds to remove and refit, i keep the fan in a bag in the back and i just make sure the spanner is there and that the threads on the fan has copper grease on just makes it a little bit eaier to fit and remove when need to.

tbh rambo i would deffo do a de-catt a.s.a.p. honestly you will gain 10 bhp and with the fan off a couple of more, i did a de-catt pipe only last weekend for a mate and it just transformed the car and it was quick before we fitted the de-catt pipe and for £17.92 inc the v.a.t. its worth it and if the cat pipe is pretty new its worth £45 on ebay as they are over £200 new.

the de-catt pipe was from paddocks.

p/n EXHESR2297 £17.92 inc vat.

it is a defender de-cat pipe as it doesn't have a or need a flexi pipe on it and is exatly the same shape.

I'm gonna stock up on viscous fans cos in the summer there's gonna be a **** load of threads on here saying"disco overheating problem" I'll make a fortune!

I have two tdi 300's and they run all year round without their viscous fans, even towing.

I have made sure that they have good coolant and thermostats and I check the coolant level regularly.

They run well and especially important in winter, they heat up quickly :D:D

Remember that viscous fans suck :D air through the rad and blow it onto the engine. So they are cooling as soon as they start turning.

I'm sorely tempted to whip my fan off, i'm only put off by the amount of threads relating to the "overheat > head gasket gone > head skim > she runs poorly now" syndrome :(

Old Disco's often overheat because they still have original rad on and they are Knackered and full of sludge. Ask me how I know ?
