Yes each bearing has a crud flinger on both sides.

The ones on the prop near the UJs recess inside the rubber bearing housing.
 
excellent..well I decided to dismantle one bearing. thin flimsy plastic seal was covering bearing race, this seal had let in sand/dust and making it noisy I believe. I'm sure the more expensive bearings are double sealed which leads me to believe I had **** ones on mine.

I'll check new ones out on Monday hopefully!

you can tell easaily as decent make will have name around edge of brg

My genuine vcu bearings direct from the main stealer int UK are marked FAG in the red plastic bit. New ones un oldun's are both red. New ones have the following stamped in the metal bearing bit:

FAG
SLOVAKIA 0015
E1208
2-539860.11

Can put pic's up if yer needs em.

Have a check of your front Diff bush/mount. Rubbers perrish causing a clonk from rear.
 
well my bearings turned up today from lrseries.....but they sent me Sh*tpart ones!!.. grrrrrr:mad:

I ordered the Reconditioned/KN/Hardy spices ones off them but the ones that turned up were in a Britpart Box and looked just as nasty if not identical to the failed ones I have just removed..

Anyone else ordered the GKN/Hardy spicer ones rom Lrseries?
 
My genuine GKN bearings from Island 4x4 have FAG bearings in them, with a bright orange rubberised seal.
 
Fitted new ones now, they replaced them with GKN ones and they turned up with FAG orange bearings.

Fitted to truck and now amazingly quiet!
 
Were they bastards to get off the VCU? When I replaced mine a couple of years ago I did the VCU as well so I didn't need to take the old bearings off. I do need to do the bearings again and would like to know what to expect...:)
 
well as the garage changed mine back in March they were pretty easy to get off.
I have the luxury of a floor standing press in my garage which helped pressing new bearings on. getting old ones off was done in a foldup workmate bench, drop whole vcu into jaws of workmate and close so the top bearing supports everything else then tapped with a brass hammer...always safer using a set of bearing pullers though as it limits the risk of damaging the spline threads...

And you probably risk dropping the VCU when the shaft lets go of the bearing...? Anyway, thinking about it, I do have an old puller kicking about somewhere. I'll probably use that.

I can't remember how I got the new bearings on the VCU I replaced a while back on mine. I definitely haven't got a press, so I must have just tapped each one home somehow!
 
as Hippo says, carefully if your socket bottoms out as you'll damage the splines on your shaft (ooer misses)
I didn't have a deep enough socket to press mine on so I took the old bearing outta the knackered rubber support bearing and used it with the shallow socket to push the new bearing home...simples :)
 
Hmm, mine is making similar noises from the front, which is annoying as it got replaced 17k ago while getting some warranty work done.

Recon it's time to go speak nicely to my local garage again. Will these bearings last longer?
 
the FAG should last the life of the VCU, although if your doing a lot of water runs or sandy Saharan driving they will deteriorate rapidly!
 
Hmm, mine got replaced about 24k ago with a recon unit, but I have my doubts over it as the garage that fitted it made a hash of other repairs.

I'll guess your place can supply bearings and vcu's and a front propshaft.
 
Bump of old topic as its relevant to me.

How are you getting on with the new bearings bedding in? Any issues with them?

Mine are getting louder but have not failed like the originals have, now getting ready to replace and I'm just wanting to be 100% sure I get good ones that will last.
