can somebody explain me in plain english what is the viscosity fan, when does it have to be changed, how to maintain it if it can be maintained and why mine sounds like a Tupolev taking off.

thaks you in advance

Bernard

you cant maintain it ,its like a clutch that allows engine to drive fan but the amount of air it moves depends on temperature of air hitting viscous unit ,when cold little drive will go to fan and you could stop it turning by putting something in it like rolled up news paper in between blades, when hot its locked up and you couldnt stop it ,they are used in place of fixed drive fan as are more economic as power from engine is only used when needed ,yours sounds seized up ,when viscous locks when hot they you can hear them shifting air , see if it turns with engine switched off if seized it wont turn and needs replacing

when cold it will turn relatively easy, worm air drawn though the radiator heats up oil in the viscos fan and starts a lock up process

how did you type that fast

Just be careful because a stone cold viscous fan will feel as if it's being driven until the fluid in it gets 'sloshed around a bit'. It only takes a few seconds then it frees up until the fluid thickens as the heat builds up.
