Well I have done VISAs myself for China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Algeria and a few others probably and have never found it complicated or time consuming!
 
I agree to what you are saying,
My point of view was "just to have one less thing to think about"...

That's all
Not saying is a good service or bad, since have not tried it yet...
