you should have let someone who knew what they were doing sort it - you'd have lost bugger all
harddrives do fail even without a virus and then theres nowt that can be done.
of course there is, there's an entire industry based around the recovery of data from apparently ''broken'' hard drives and similar media
theres a big difference between an "apparently broken" drive and a broken one.
just how are you going to recover data from a drive where the actual disc has physically broken?

if the ''disc'' or more accurately the platters, are physically broken I would suggest that the owners were past caring about a few landy pictures - the fact that the OP has been able to re-install his OS indicates the drive is perfectly functional
physically breaking a platter (most modern drives have numerous platters) is VERY VERY difficult in normal use
the most common ''damage'' is due to bad sectors, or simple component failure on the controller board, throw in a few seek head errors ..... all easy to read and recover from
I have seen drives that came from buildings that were raised to the ground by fire - the platters are usually perfectly intact and easily readable
provided you have circa 10k worth of equipment
it can be done - difficult, expensive, but it can be done.
