At around 50 miles per hour my Defender 110 has developed an intermittent massive violent juddering that seriously shakes the whole car and only goes away if I slow down to around 25 mph. It's very scary Sometimes I can then drive fo 100 miles with no problem and then it recurs and could come back anytime.
My garage has had a look and did a wheel balance The mechanic said he thought it was possibly something in the transmission Anyone experienced anything like this before ?

If you've checked the wheels and presumably the bearings, just start working your way up from there. Ie bushings, prop shafts and ujs.
Are there any noises as well as the shuddering?
I did have a similar intermittent issue and turned out to be a loose handbrake drum and contaminated shoes binding

Is the steering affected, moving an inch or two left-right when you get the wobble

+1 on the above, go through the whole front axle to start with. Hub pivots, ball joints on the rear connecting bar and the steering arm from the box as well. Also check the pannard rod and suspension arm bushes. Welcome by the way:D
