Put the screwdriver or any long metal instrument in different locations to see if u can narrow down the noise generally noises you can pin point them to a certain location or so I can at work, even before the chassis ears go on it.

Does it do it on idle and no gear or just when its in a drive gear with foot on brake holding it on?

I get a light judder when setting off very slowly with light throttle and I mean light if I raise it it disappears I put it down to it being a old girl.

Amazon do a automotive stethoscope for about 6 quid. Just bought one to narrow a 'noise' down from underneath somewhere!

Im starting to struggle with where to go next with this guys! Really want it sorting but cant think what to try next ;(

I think you've had some good suggestions.

Get yourself that £3 stethoscope. Might get one myself.

Isolating the area sounds like a good one. Disconnect the props. See if that makes any difference and listen with the stethoscope. After that let's reassess.

Looking at RAVE there's an oil pump in the transfer box. What if that was acting up a bit? Does it move all the time?

If the Morse-chain was a bit slack might it touch somewhere at idle?

What about the VCU? That's pressed into the casing, isn't it? I cannot think why it would vibrate but does it have a bearing or something that might?

Thanks Grrr did you watch the you tube vids I put on? I've had the props of and no difference. Will get one of theses stethoscopes ordered now...

I did, missed the fact the props were off though.

So, only does it at idle.

Does it in D.
Does it in R.
Doesn't do it in N?
Doesn't do it in Low?
No exhaust touching.
Engine and gearbox mounts all changed.
Handbrake makes no difference.
Props off makes no difference.
So, must be coming through the gearbox or from the transfer box but no noises from the front of the gearbox, only the transfer box end.

If you put a fuse in the slot to put the transfer box in neutral and rerun the tests is it quiet?

Ive not thought about putting the transfer box in N... Ill try that tonight!!

Failing that Ill have to bite the bullet and do the flex plate... Independent wants BIG £s to change it so might try myself..

Thought you'd listened at that end and it was quiet? That stethoscope might help!

First rule of running a workshop. Anything that is likely to cost time in the workshop, OVER PRICE the job.

Amended summary.

Transfer box neutral makes no difference - i.e. still does it.
No exhaust touching.
Engine and gearbox mounts all changed.
Handbrake makes no difference.
Props off makes no difference.

Hmmm. Think you really need that stethoscope.

Engine goes into automatic gearbox, comes out of autobox and into transfer box, power goes to driveshafts.

When transfer box is in neutral (transfer-box neutral as opposed to gearbox neutral) I don't think there should be anything moving past the epicyclic gear set (looking at the Borg Wagner Overhaul Manual in RAVE). So must be upstream of that or possibly around the epicyclic itself. Which brings us back to the stethoscope.

I wonder if JamesMartin might have seen this before? He seems pretty good with this sort of thing. Might be worth drawing his attention to it? I don't think he's that far from you either.
