As per my other post, I serviced my engine last week, 200k 300tdi which ran sweet as a nut prior to service. Since then it's felt down on power and has a vibration too. I don't know if it's related to the oil and filters change or whether it's just coincidence.

The vibration is hard to describe, it's a bit like holding your mobile as it rings and vibrates, but constant. I can feel it in the gear stick, pedals, floor and seat. It appears to get worse as the engine warms up, and when going down hill letting the engine hold it back I think I can hear a faint groaning noise, but can't be sure. It stops when the clutch is pressed, but if I give the engine some revs I can still feel it, so I don't think it's gearbox issues but I could be wrong.

I've owned it for about 7 months and it's always had a judder/heavy vibration when giving it some up hill or when I'm towing and it's under load. I greased up the uj's which helped a bit and have also replaced all the rear axle/suspension bushes and A frame ball joint over the past month, but it still judders. Not sure if this is related to the above problem or just worn uj's and drive train.

Any suggestions?

It shouldn't vibrate when you are going up a hill, that suggests something vibrates when it comes under load, not saying it is, but like the turbo only kicks in when under load.
The problem is, it could be gearbox or transfer box, drivetrain, it could be anything really!

It's not the turbo, if it caused a vibration then it would **** it's self feairly shortly after. I'd say it's a rotating part causing it, but seeing as it gets worse with heat then I'm guessing it's internal, but that doesn't really narrow it down and why would fresh oil cause it to start or become more noticeable?
I think the judder is uj related, but thought I'd mention it incase it pointed at something relating to the main problem

I used turbo as a loose example of something that kicks in at higher rpm's

Before leaving work tonight i got under the bonnet and had a listen, the fuel pump sounds noisey, making a ticking noise and the lift pump lever doesnt return on its own. Its a cheap delphi pump thats never worked manualy, but then neither did the one I replaced.

Gearbox bearings or seals. Hope it's not an engine bearing. Could be just something loose in your handbrake drum.
Did you fix the air filter etc. down securely?

Vibrations generally come with a sound, so see if you can walk around and look underneath with the engine running to narrow it down.

Oh, well, start there then.

Thanks for your input Vinlander. I'm dissapointed though that a forum with 110,000 members, only one has offered any suggestions!

I'm struggling to think of anything that oil and filters can do to cause such issues. Could the air filter be blocking the air intake? IS there an air leak into the fuel system that might be causing this? Things can open up as they get hot - I had a terrible trouble tracking down a blowing turbo hose on a Ford which only opened up with the bay getting up to working temp.

My first thought when it felt down on power was crappy air filter so I took it out and it did feel marginly better, but it would even if you did that with a decent filter. Earlier on I read on here someone mentioning they had a problem with turbo pipe sucking, so I took it off but it made no difference.
It sounds different on tickover and seems faintly lumpy at idle. I stuck a long screwdriver on various parts of the engine and had a listed, but all sounds good and smooth, apart from the fuel pump tapping, but that could be normal?

I cracked the injectors to check for an airlock and noticed when I tightened number 1 injector it sounded like it was barely making contact with something (the piston I'd imagine) as I pulled on it to snug it up. I did the same on all the others without any issues. If that is the case then it points toward worn big ends allowing the con rod to move a fraction further than it should I suppose.

One thing I haven't checked is the valve clearences, but I'll do that tomorrow when the engines cold before I leave work.

Give it time mate, and don't be surprised if not everyone feels super inclined to go through every bit on a Landy that can intermittently vibrate, although we can point you in the direction of a complete parts catalogue ;)
Sounds like you're starting to marrow it down anyway, so good luck.

Ta. I was a mechanic for a good few years, so know my way around an engine, but it's always good to get input from people who know about specific things, like landrovers :)

You keep mentioning u/js, greasing helped but not cured, change them.

They're not expensive, even if you pay a spanner monkey to do it so if it's not the issue at least you'll know you're not about to throw a prop and lost very little

I don't think your lift pump should be tapping.

And I very much doubt if your issues are caused by a worn big end, they don't normally affect running, just make a noise.
It may be that you have more than one issue, and also possible it is a coincidence that it happened after service.

Power loss and vibration are quite big subjects, have you tried forum search?

It's high on the list of to do's, but it appears to be an engine related problem. I think the under load judder is unrelated, but mentioned it just incase it was a clue to the problem.

Worn/dry sliding joints can cause vibration as well.
