Any one with knowledge on this? I saw a post a while back which matched my symptoms but I'm buggered if I can find it now. The problem was very minor but is definitely getting worse. There are no problems in 1,2 or 3rd but when I get into 4th gear at just above 50mph I get a very hard vibration (like going over a bad cattle grid) on acceleration or while going up hill. I could swear I smelt a clutch type burning the last big hill I went up in fourth but that could have been from a different vehicle.
I think the post mentioned a torque converter problem wouldn't that affect all gears?

Sorry it's a 2000 2.5dse and I have been using a psi power box since I've owned it. It's done 140000.

check the viscous fan my dse had a really bad vibration, thought engine was on way out turned out fan had shed three blades wasn't all that obvious to spot. worth a look.

The cattle grid effect refers to the L322. On the P38 I'd guess at the flex plate. When did you last change the oil & filter on the auto box? It should be done every 25K miles, if not done recently that would be my first step plus a bottle of Lucas Transmission fix. The power box takes the torque over the limit for the box.

I changed the oil and filter about a year ago. Only done about 6000 miles since then. I did change the viscous coupling about 3 months ago. I torqued the nut up to the correct n/m but I forgot to use thread lock. Have you heard of them coming undone.

Rare but if you didn't use a new Nyloc maybe.

Can't say I've noticed that. Seems to be directly under me. I tried today locking it in 3 rather than D and accelerated to 60 ish. No sign of the vibration.

Thought so, my final question would be can a torque converter affect a particular gear or is my problem likely to be my actual gearbox.

I don't have the knowledge to give you a definitive answer but torque convertor lock up occurs at about 50 mph in top which is where you say the vibration occurs, I'm guessing, but a failing clutch in the torque convertor of an L322 can produce vibration so it may be possible that the same could happen in the P38 box even though the operational mode is a bit different.
You need James Martin or Bemble for more info.
