super job Taipan. soz i werent pickin holes - just wanted to know wot yu is on about.

No worries mate, as our colonial cousins ould say:D Dunno why you couldn't see 'em? Could no one else see them? Perhaps they wasn't there. Perhaps we aren't here. I want me mum:(

Ah, It was number 14 I was on about.

That's the next one on my list to do. Have you had expericnace of this one causing vibration problems?

Not sure if this is connected or not, but my car pulls to the left hand side. There is play in one track rod end and I am replacing that at the weekend. Interestingly enough, a guy on another forum has trouble with his car (same 2.0L Freelander) pulling to the left but he cant find anything wrong, no play in bearings, steering joints etc. But, and this is the interesting part (well almost:p ) he's car has a distinct vibration at 1700 rpms too! Coincidence?

Funny enough my FL pulls to the left very slightly. Tracking is fine I still have to get round to checking the LH mount completely. I have replaced the bush of the lower tie rod with a more solid prototype, seems to have worked but there is still the creeking sound of engine rock on the mounts, so another mount is slack

Only thing I can think of is LH drive shaft being off-set in some way. to pull car.

We are all ears Taipan to see how it progresses

could it be fronr/rear alignment? when ya tracking woz checked was it 4wheel alignment or only the front two?

you always get an element of "pull" to the kerb caused by the camber of the road. Some cars are also designed this way, so that if you are no longer in control (heart attack?) the car will run off the road and not across the road into other traffic.

Useful point MHM but its fine on all four corners. Still does it when prop is off as well.

Mine does it with the prop off too. I'm going to get it tracked once I've done the track rod end. But I have to say it never used to pull to the left and the problem has arisen pretty much the same time as the vibration got worse? I'm just wonderingif there is alink as 3 people (that we know of) have this vibration and the coincidental pulling to the left? Interesting.:)

another thought - dont think it is relevant, but i had similar problem with my 220 when i first got it - violent (and i mean VIOLENT) pull to lhs - garage checked - alignment fine - but there was a tyre mismatch across the front wheels - both same size, but one was Michelin and one was Avon - there was a 20mm diff in rolling road diameter. It was proved to me by switching wheels across the axle and then - VIOLENT pull to off side. Changed tyre and all Hunkey Dory!

Tiny did suffer from something similar - yeah. Used to get louder the further your right foot went down in low revvs then just go as soon as the power really kicked in. I replaced the tie bar and all went quiet for a while. It returned a few weeks later so I went on a mission banging panels with my fist and found that most of the front wing screws were loose. Once all was tight and strategic padding placed between panels it all went quiet again...until recently....

The vibration is back. It seems to be from the N/S/F and sounds like vibration from the l series is going straight to the chassis. No pulling to the left though. If I go easy on the gas all is well but put my foot down in low revvs and - "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Hummmmmmmmmmmmm"

Weird huh! Mine is better with lighter throttle but if you bury the pedal in the carpet its better once its vibed its way through it?

I ordered up the other mount today and weather permitting, i'll fit it at the weekend. That'll be the lower tie rod and the gearbox mounting I've replaced then! I think that only leaves me three more mounts to go!:( :D

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but I had my FL in at a main dealer today for what maybe the same problem. When I picked it up, the service guy said that there had been a technical bulletin issued to cover the problem, and that a modification to the gearbox damper had been performed.

Maybe worth a look??

I'll have a word, but they won't even let me look at the Microcat screen when they're tracking a part down, so I suspect not! I think some people there got a telling off over the appearance of RAVE on Wigan market, so they're a bit touchy about that kind of thing now!!

There is indeed a TSB for the gearbox damper, but its affects the TD4s and not the XEDIs. Thanks anyway.:)

Well I replaced the gearbox mount today, but that hasn't cured it either. I knew it wouldn't as soon as I got the mount out. It was slightly tighter than the newer one but hardly anything in it and certainly not persihed or anything. So I may as well ebay it and the lower tie rod as they are more than good enough to use again! Ho hum!:(

So I really dont know now? I suppose drive shafts next and then ird and gearbox? I must nail it eventually! I feel really gutted and pished off that I didnt fix it.:( Oh well onwards and downwards!:D

Oh dear. So still no Joy then? Sounds identical to Tiny with the vibration. Hmmm...thinking caps on then. Just to check this is the same problem - does it drive fine on light throttle but as soon as you put your foot down you get a "grrrrr..hummmmm" like you are in the wrong gear (but you are not) which eventually goes further up the revvs?

In fact - just had a thought...isn't there a bracket from the IRD to the block which has a habit of breaking and causing vibrations?

Ah - got it!!!
Worth a look do you think?

Hi Mate

On very light throttle openings its there but almost nonexistent. Its severity does indeed increase with load. Mine comes in on all gears but seems more noticable in the higher gears, presumably because it takes longer to drive through the affected rev range in these gears.

The vibration on mine comes in between 1500 and is gone after 2000 rpms, with a peak shuddering stage at 1750 rpms especially in 4th or 5th gear.

I looked that link but it says its for the 1.8 derivatives and teh affected rev range is higher. That said it may still be worth an investigation. Not sure if the 1.8s and 2.0Ls share the same gearbox or not? If they do then there's no reason why the same fault couldn't appear? Good call.

I'll be back under teh car again this weekend. :D

I recon they have got the details wrong to be honest - its listed under L series but refers to the K series?!? Also - can you imagine pulling those revvs and NOT getting vibration?

I chuckled on my work today as i was driving without the stereo on with my ear tilted and an atrentive frown on my face every time I accelerated thinking "I bet Taipan is doing the same".
I recon the resonator under the n/s/f wing is worth another look. I may just remove it and go for a test drive. Anyone know what it actually does????

Silly random question Taipan - do you get any clutch judder?
