bear in mind that i work at a fast fit so tracking, balancing, tyre and suspension work is what i do. i picked up my first disco last night and driving it back along the m1 there was the odd rough patch of tarmac that when i drove over it at 60 caused the steering to vibrate after the vibration of the rough road. almost as though the wheel balancing had randomly been knocked way out then it returned to a smooth ride again. it was really concerning as the first time it did it i thought i had loose wheel nuts. obviously these have been checked and found to be fine.

also while im asking about steering suspension issues does anyone know of a way to stop the steering wheel rubbing against the column surround. strangely the steering wheel does lift away by about 6-7 mm which seems excessive to me is there a way to adjust so the steering wheel doesn't rub and doesn't have this amount of play?
 
When I bought my standard 150,000 mile Disco 1 V8 a couple of years ago, it used to shake it's steering violently over a local level crossing and for about the next fifty yards.
I thought that a simple steering damper change would solve the problem but found out that whilst it improved things very slightly, the shake continued. Over a period of time, I changed all the bushings on the front and rear radius arms, the A frame ball joint and bushes and rebuilt the front swivels and wheel bearings. This largely cured the issue.
A change of front and rear dampers (standard road going not off road) has finished the job and it's now a pleasure to drive.

so you changed everything and it got rid of the problem?

The point that I was trying to make was that there were many contributory factors on my high mileage vehicle. Each replacement improved the ride/handling but the steering shake did not disappear until I had replaced or rebuilt all of the parts listed.
 
With regards to the steering wheel, it's possible that it's been off before and the rotary coupler hasn't been fitted back properly.

Moved my wheel the other day and didn't line up the tabs on the back properly into there slots and it gave the same symptoms of sounding like its rubbing.

I was lucky only to bend the tabs and not break them.
 
wow cheers guys for the quick responses. i'm taking her into work today so i will have her up on a ramp hopefully. the steering damper is a tf one with hd steering rods.

as for the steering wheel it doesn't sit straight when driving straight so i'm going to hopefully get the tracking done today and i can check everything over. but i would have thought the wheel has been off as it has had a fairly extensive rebuild to get rid of all the rot
 
Right tracking is now done and ive inspected everything underneth I cant find anything that would indicate why it vibrates everything seems solid
 
Have also found that the panhard rod is polybushed on both ends it also has recent swivels that are teflon coated the a frame ball joint is a gwyn lewis adjustable one and the a frame is also polybushed
 
think i have cured the vibration. I checked my wheels for balance and they were out all over the place so re-balanced them and tonight had a trip down to braintree area and now random vibration so hopefully that was my problem :) I'll keep a check on it and report anything i find but for now it seems to be fixed
