Hi, I have just tried using the low range box on an 04 td5 auto, (has no diff lock) and whilst turning to the right a bit I noticed a rumbling or vibration that seemed to come from the r/h front area. drove it in high range again and the vibration still seems to occur intermittently, is something in the transmission BU--ERED, or is this type of thing normal for this vehicle. Also I have noticed when the steering is over fairly well to one side or another, there seems to be a hell of a lot of free play at the steering wheel , could be because I'm not informed and used to rack and pinion types I suppose ,but any advice on these topics would be much appreciated. Best Rgds.

Hi baldeagle,

Certainly not normal. I have an 01 td5 auto. I had an intermittent knock from the front end, more noticeable in low range as travelling slower and not masked by engine noise.
My problem was anti roll bar bushes.

Also I have no noticeable free play in the steering.

Hope this helps
