Hi, Zoners...
I just returned to my '96 Defender 90 Tdi 300 after its use by a friend for a few months. When I checked it out I noticed a bit of free play in the right front wheel when pulled at the top of the wheel with the car on the ground. I figured it might be a wheel bearing. Later in the day, when I was having new tyres installed, jacked up the front end and found that there was a significant, even alarmiing amount of freee=play in the front wheel, as though something was very loose of missing. I could really check it our then, but I must right away because I am worried about driving the in this condition. With the new tyres on it seems more stable
and it drives okay, although the steering is a bit loose. I am going to take a look, but being a newbie non-mechanic, I am not sure what to look for! The front suspension was redone about a year ago, all new heavy-duty off-road parts from Gwyn Lewis 4X4...didn't do the wortk myself...could something have come loose? Thoughts on how best to sort it out? Boats are my thing, not cars....help!
 
Welcome to Landyzone, wheel hub bearings a good place to start , might just be loose lock nuts , then check swivel hubs and balljoints shake wheel and see what moves :)

Checked lock nuts of course as just mounted new tyres...not the problem. Whatever the problem is, it is inside the wheel hub...I don't hear any grinding sounds when the wheel is rotated, do I am guessing the adjustment and locking nuts for the wheel bearings are loose. Lock washer may have not been bent properly. I plan to pull the wheel and open the hub...will let you all know...any other ideas after seeing videos appreciated! Greg

I didn’t mean the wheel nuts but the lock nuts on the bearings , the videos a bit dark but that play is frightening, after adjusting these, can you inspect with wheel off and lever things around , I can see some arm moving behind wheel not sure what it is may be different to my series.

That is scary:(. Take the wheel off and do the same again as ^^^. I would think it would be pretty obvious whats knackered then:).

How did your friend not hear or notice that and say something before it got that bad. looks like the swivels have gone.
