hello to all
jumped in my series 3 this morning she purred into life as usual but got to the end of the road and when i jumped on the brakes with both feet as you do ! it gave out the most horrendous metallic noise that sounded like the front diff had just dropped off !!! any ideas guys has anyone else had this happen any ideas would be appreciated thanks.

ffs sake have a look at yer brake shoes . i'd say there better than a 8 in 10 chance they is fooked.

cheers but shoes fine first thing i checked no abnormal play in the wheels this is a really loud bang not a grinding noise ! at first i thought the wheel had just dropped off it really is that bad but cant see anything unusual ?

wish it had at least i would know whats wrong with the old girl ! it was the only way to describe the bang !!!

did it come from th efront? was it in 4wd? have you jacked it up and turned a wheel?

was from the front but cant determine what side in 2wd with freewheeleing hubs locked all as normal jacked up wheels found nothing abnormal ?

just tried that and the wheel locks up with the usual slack in a diff so its not a snapped half shaft if that was what you were thinking but thanks for the input .

both sides the same ! could it be more transfer or gearbox related or would i be better taking off the freeweeling hubs ?

my first thought was a half shaft or a prop problem.

could possibly be a diff or the t/box too.
have you tried to drive it since?

so, do it, do it when you just slow down or do ya have to actually brake fer it to do it

If its everytime you brake could be the whole assy jumping. Had that with a drum brake once, where it cluncked fairly loudly because there was play in the shoe assy.
