Did you clean and check the pump before you fitted it? Please don't tell me that you bought a second hand tank with an old pump in it and just stuck it straight in!!!

You can check the relay and pump in one by doing as Datatek says and see what comes out when you turn the ignition. Obviously if the relay is knackered then the pump won't run so you won't get any fuel.

If you can see or smell anything like burning in the under bonnet fuse box or in any of the relay sockets in it then change it. Bad starting could soon become the very least of your problems. Please don't buy a second hand one, there are some serious Rangie owners who reckon that these should be changed after about eight years regardless of how it appears, make sure you buy a diesel one.

Anyway, it's nice to talk to a fellow diesel driver in amongst all these V8s.
hello im not getting any smells from the fuse box it was just something i was told to check.im pritty shoure the relay works as the car drives but someone on here still thinks it needed checking i was wondering wot that would that have to do with the air in the fule line maybe messes around with the pump i dont know....and yes mate dont hang me but thats just wot i did with the tank and pump:doh:but like i said all looked well and it come off a car that i know was working ok befor it went into ditch:eek: thanks jamie
 
Take the fuel filter off, put a bowl under it and get some one to turn the ignition on, you should get a substantial burst of fuel. Second hand fuel pumps are a false economy.
hi im very shoure the pump works i dont think the car would start at all if it was not would it???:confused: it just takes a long time when low on fule air gets in some where but only when low on disel thanks jamie
 
just a thought,when you take the fuel filter off to test the pump,have a look that you only have one sealing washer fitted.a friend of mine had his disco serviced by a main stealer and they left the old seal on as well as fitting the new one.it was a bast#rd to start

You're relying on the in-tank pump to get the engine started, then the injector pump takes over. If the in-tank pump is faulty or the pipework is cracked then the fuel can find it's way back and/or out and you get air in the line.
 
the inner seal was doubled up not allowing the filter to compleatly seal on the outer,this allowed air to build up in the filter housing = a bast#rd to start
 
hey jamie is sad o meter cockney for sedimenter? This was designed to take water and SEDIMENT ie sand,soil etc out of the fuel (when filling from jerry cans) before it got to the fuel filter.Its basically a settlement bowl with a tap at the bottom to drain the crap off

are you showing off agen mate.. your the only one thats pointed that out well done mate go to the top of the class dont walk run.......hold on to your seat mate cos i cant spell for **** so keep an eye out ok

It will start and run with a duff in tank pump if the tank is half full or more, the FIP will suck it through. Still reckon it's likely to be the pump assembly, the lift pipe splits, with a little fuel in the tank it will let in air, if there is enough fuel in the tank to cover the split it works fine. However if you can't be bothered to check it and want to go chasing rainbows that's your choice.
