Afternoon.

Simple question (I thought), but I've not found a simple answer. Is anyone running a 19j on either SVO or SVO / diesel blend? Wasn't looking at going down the route of twin tanks, heaters, making biodiesel etc. Can't find anywhere near the Forest of Dean selling biodiesel to the public. Just wanted to be able to stick veg oil in the tank. Anyone doing this successfully?
 
I'd be interested to know also, I have no diesel in the 110 and a whopping great big pan of fat to dispose of. ;)
 
im running my 200 tdi on veg oil just now 15 ltres diesel 5 ltres veg oil sweet as a nut bit of a do filtering it tho but ive got it sorted now
 
Thanks willhayes. My problem is I've found plenty of happy campers running their 200 tdi's, but I wonder how different things would be in a 19j (1989).

Lucas injection pumps don't like it. It caused nothing but grief - bio was fine though. I date say you would get away with a small volume of SVO, but then it's hardly worth the effort.
 
you wouldn't want to run anything other than refined diesel in a td5 or later. The fuel pumps are so fragile and the risk of doing damage so high it would never justify the saving you make through blend your own
 
For those telling me to do a search - I have. What I get is what has happened above. I ask about running a 19j on svo and get people telling about how their td5 works on it or the even more helpful remark above saying "just do it pussy". Brilliant. Thank you to those actually being helpful

Try different search keywords....SVO, Veg oil, WVO.....there's fook loads of info on here.....you won't find a definitive answer but hundreds of opinions :rolleyes:
 
Thanks blue beasty. That is what I've found. No definitive answer. Well, maybe I'll do what storm99 suggests and try a blend
 
SVO in the right circumstances will work, but the problem is keeping the criteria spot on. The problem with the Lucas CAV pump is it is quite fragile at the best of times. Diesel can be relied on to have a viscosity of between about 30 and 40 SSU so the pump has been designed with this in mind.

Take palm oil for example, 200SSU, the pump tolerances are too fine to cope happily with this fuel, which is why loads of veg in one of these can lead to engine speed pickup issues – now bear in mind the pump is quite fragile, forcing heavy oil through it will not lubricate it properly and can cause over pressurisation of some parts of the pump because it does rely on some diesel to spill back past plungers etc to lubricate them. To give you an idea of injection pump tolerances, if you take a stripped down, cleaned injection pump, and try and replace for example the fuel plungers or rotor dry, they will not go in, add a little diesel to lubricate them and they will slide in perfectly.
