we decided to check my vcu as I know the bearing have to be done and I put a breaker bar on and it went down on its own with no weight on the end it took about 5 - 10 seconds is this good .?

no, sounds a bit quick

From Nodge

I can say with absolute certainty that the VCU is serviceable if a time of under 1 minute is recorded with a 5Kg weight hung on the end of a 1.2M lever.
A new GKN VCU records under 20 seconds for the same test weight.
A good used VCU will record up to 45 seconds in the same test.

when i say no, its no where near as bad if it took ages.
Just dont know when 4 wheel drive will kick in in time. Take it on some wet grass and boot it

soon as I have had the bearing done I will try it I was on soft sand a couple of weeks ago and no problems in fact I towed some body out

Probably good then. Too stiff is bad so i suppose too loose it not as bad

Something isn't right with a 5 to 10 second time, without any weight. That's basically no fluid resistance at all. Most Freelanders wouldn't be that free with both rear wheels off the ground.

am I doing it right , it is an auto so I put it into neutral and no hand break on or should I leave it in drive

now on you tube it says put the parking (hand) brake on but surly the wheel would not move at all with that on.

The HB MUST no OFF. The auto box in Park. Lift 1 rear wheel off the ground and run the test on the lifted wheel. If more than 1 wheel is off the ground, the test is invalid.

Just done it and it was 32 seconds I knew you would be good for the info and on YouTube one man uses 5kgs of weight so I did it with 8 kgs like most people say so now son in law will just replace the bearings .and I for got to say the mrs said she saw both back wheels of the ground when I tested it first.
Thanks Nodge

bloody post we were going to do the bearings today but they never arrived oh well it looks as though it is going to be dry all weekend.

well they never arrived this morning I knew they would not as the tracker said it had been booked for posting , so off we went to Paddocks and wow that place gets bigger and bigger and they had the cheap one in which were britpart and the dearer ones in which were GKN so I went for them just over £52 each but I am not getting rid of the car anytime soon that's why I chose them .son in law is coming around tomorrow to do them . oh how I wish I had good legs and knees like I had years ago.
