Ive owned my car since January when it was on 84k, its now just below 90k. Reading the forum seems as though Im in the danger area regards to mileage. Ive checked it using the tippex test - despite being told this is a waste of time. Also reversing on full lock in both directions. All seems ok
Just trying to find out what to look for with faulty ones incase I miss mine when it starts to fail.

I was told by Bell engineering to drive it for 12 miles then feel the VCU. If it feels very hot, it could be on the way out.

The change is so progressive you won't notice it. If I were in your position and at 90k I'd change it now. The longer you wait the more worry and risk of damage.

Yes I am thinking of getting it changed in the next few months - unless something happens sooner.

How much does Bell Engineering charge to fit?

Give it a test and tell us the results. Age, mileage, known original, not known if original or replaced previously, and test result = time, weight and length of bar. Video below for you to copy. Time through 45 degrees to the horizontal.

I'll try that.

Was it just the VCU you had fitted?

Yes just the VCU was changed. The support bearings were ok. Bit tricky getting them off the old VCU and you will need a puller to do this. The other way is to order new bearings and fit them to the new unit.

I did it myself. The new VCU was £200 + PP of £30. Bell engineering charge another £30 to send the old unit back, so £260 all in.
