I took the advice from previous threads on how to test it and confirmed that my VCU was knackered. Took it off today (quite straightforward actually) and now need advice on whether to get brand new one @ £400 (approx) or a reconditioned one. There's a company called Bell who i think recon them but does anyone else have an opinion and can give an approx cost. I'm also thinking it makes sense to change the bearing and oil seal while the housing is off. Are they standard sized or main dealer items. Thanks

Doesn't come in a branded LR Box but Island 4x4 are about the cheapest your'II find for OEM parts...My Recommended Parts Supplier...

IMO get a new: Transfer Box Viscous Coupling RTC6044 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.

wammers have a link in a how to for bearings supply, maybe not really needed, sure someone else can advise

The island VCU was the one i was thinking of. Just wanted an opinion of whether the refurbs were any good.I definitely need to change the nearing the bearing though it felt & sounded lumpy when i spun it. Thanks for the advice anyway.

I have used bell before and they are very good, the VCU was excellent

Thought I'd give
Bell' a ring to check prices but I'm not sure where they are. Googled it and there is one coming up in Sheffield. Is that the one.

It looks to me that the Bell ones are for Freelanders - and these are different to the P38 ones..

I couldn't see on their website anything about P38 ones though? Does anyone have a link to recon P38 VCU's?

Being as the unit is a sealed item I cannot see how it could be overhauled/re-manufactured, the only thing I can think of is a paraffin overhaul after being checked over......

Buy new and fit. simple.

That was the point I was trying to make re the earlier discussion about recon VCUs.

The cheapest I've seen new is Ashcroft transmissions.

Ashcroft have a very good reputation and the price looks keen - what have you got to lose?
