Right so I now have a cheap infrared laser thermometer to do the "turnip test" :)

2001 TD4 72,000 with original VCU , 4 matched tyre all tread within 1mm front/back .

journey from work 7 miles mostly at 30mph with traffic

outside temp - 6.2 c
IRD - 52 c
Rear diff-16c ? ( wet so could not lay under car to get at properly )
VCU- front section 12 c rear section 19 c

Will try when dry & after longer run at higher speed .

Understood. You chaps know more than me. What of these LR systems (haldex aside) actually works best in your opinions. What I am after is something that drives like a car - like my FL in mondo but that you can select 4x4 when / if required??
How about an opel frontera then ?

Just over 75k! And I think mines going!tight when on full lock in reverse! Will find a thermometer to carry out the turnip test!

just helping out the guy - he wanted "something that drives like a car - like my FL in mondo but that you can select 4x4 when / if required" :p

I assumed he would like it to be more reliable, as well :p :behindsofa:

Back on topic, if your talking about original vcu, then about 48kmiles ! Freelander spares uk replacement = 10,000 miles! taking the ird and rear diff with it. My 55 plate td4 is currently in kit form on a garage floor!

It should have a life of 70,000 miles at least.

Mine is starting to tighten up now in reverse on full lock, I noticed it parking up the other day. I'm on about 85k, need to do a temp test now me thinks!?

if all you noobs learn to use the search button you will see that they can fail at various mileages

it's been discussed to death

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing
