Hi, my 1994 defender was broken into by some scrout who tried to steal it with a hammer and chisel, so now I have to replace the ignition barrel. I have the wheel off and all the trim, and I come to the security bolts holding the ignition barrel to the steering column... Any suggestions how I remove these so I can fit my new barrel and take my car home?

If you have cover, AA or your chosen recovery service,

They carry the tools for such a job if you have the part

A centre punch and a hammer or even a small screwdriver. As has been said after a few taps they should come out ok

Isn't the switch replaceable without having to remove the whole barrel? There's grub screw (I think) allowing yo uto remove the ignition switch assembly from the barrel. If they've taken a drill to the switch you might only have to replace this bit.

how do you tighten up the bolts once a new bottom section is used??

Glad you did not loose your Landy, but you say that you have to get it home ? Did they break into it when it was parked away from your home ? And how did they get into it ? All the information that you post on the Forum will help the rest of us to protect our vehicles. Best to post it in the Land Rovers Stolen section. Best wishes, but probably a good time for you to add another level of security.

Thanks everyone. Finally got it done with a hammer and centre punch, really needed a lot of encouragement, fought all the way! Another 'fender job that took 3 hours to take apart and 10 minutes to rebuild. Cheers!
