Hello,

Is it possible to replace a broken spring without head removal?
I have a 300 tdi

I have found mention of this on another site but it does not explain how?

on a petrol injun it should be possible to feed some rope or old fan belt into the cylinder then get piston at TDC ish. this should stop the valve from dropping. you then need some means of compressing the spring, which shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.
course i dunno if it possible on yer injun to access the cylinder as yer int got a spark plug to remove and i don't know how feasible it is to use yer injector hole neither.

Err, its the spring compressing bit without using a valve spring compressor thats stumps me! Thanks.

folk just get a big bar then find a way to anchor it over the valve spring; pull down and bobs yer granny. its one of them things that unless yer actually dun it on the actual injun , you can't be very specific.
perhap you could use a rocker shaft stud to hold it or wedge in under the wing or manifold.

dunno, you're the one that can see it and see what is possible and what isn't.

so unless someone here has done it on your particular injun yer just gonna have to apply a bit of thought to it, or take the head orf

Sounds possible..

I do have the head off. Re skimmed today and wanted to start putting back on tonight but broken spring, none in stock round here so some ordered from rimmer bros. Have brother in laws wedding this w/e so wanted to get finished before that.

If new spring does not arrive I will give it a test with head on block but without all the bolts etc fixed. Can set number 1 cylinder to tdc before dropping head on and that should hold valve up.

yer dint wanna be turn the crank without it being connect to the camshaft, just to avoid any pôssible problems.
if the head is orf just wait till yer get yer spring, its much easier that way and less likely to get ****ed up
