Hi All,

I appreciate that this will seem a silly question to some, but I am confused.

I want to check the valve clearances on my 2.25 s3 petrol engine. I know there are a number of methods but I am going to work my way through the Haynes manual and it says check valve x when valve y is fully open.

My question is: is the valve fully open when the spring is fully compressed?

Thanks

Yes.

Put a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley, and wind the engine over with the rocker cover removed.

Use the rule of 9, when No1 valve is fully open, check No8, when No6 is fully open, check No3, and so on. Use a new cork seal when you replace the rocker cover.

Another daft question, without a DTI how do you know when No.1 is fully open?

FYI, 6 and 2 is 8 :D:D
Hold a finger on the rocker, you will feel it move down as you turn the crank, there is a brief period when it stops moving before then starting to come back up. It is this period of not moving that is fully open. ONce you have turned the engine over a few times to get you feel for it it is very straight forward. Writing it down make sit sound more complex than it is.

Apologies, I meant 6 and 3, I was in a hurry.

I just go by eye, because the cam lobe keeps the valve open for a fair time, you get the feel of it after a while.
