Is there anyone out there who can give me some advice on how to go about valuing a Defender please?

There seems to be such a mad variation on price for similar Defenders. For anyone who’s seen my other posts you might have noticed that I’m looking to change to a Discovery for 7 seat capacity. So fairly soon I’m going to have to put my Defender up for sale, but struggling a little with what realistic pricing would be.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance :)
 
At the moment, most defender owners think of a figure and then add 50%, try it on for a few weeks then drop the price to a more realistic level.......:D
 
And any advice on where is the best place to advertise a Defender for sale?

I would say good old ebay.
No matter where you sell it you will get time watsrs asking stupid questions.
I sometimes think less is more with adverts, ie for sale land rover defender yr 2000 87k blue asking 8k, will get more attention (as people think it will be a potential bargain) than an advert that goes into miniscule detail about every little part of the car, the trick is to get them to see the car, once you have achieved that you are half way there.

People always think their cars are worth what the dealer sells them for!
 
I totally get what you mean Lynall, so just give the bare minimal information on specification of the vehicle, maybe a bullet list or something.

Regarding price I’m still undecided on whether to go for a figure I’m happy with and stick to that, or to go for a higher price to take it down a bit...??
 
When looking at completed listings on eBay it’s difficult to n ow what was sold and at what price etc with a lot of the adverts being classifieds, they don’t show red/green for unsold/sold. Also some red unsold completed listings could have been sold but not officially through eBay if you know what I mean?!
 
At the end of the day, you need to try and sell the vehicle at a value your happy with. If your 'price' is too high then unless you get some gullible fool come along who knows feck all about defenders, it won't sell.
You must know in your mind what the equivalent is going for, say a 2002 TD5 (10-12k), IMO the majority are way overpriced but good luck to them.

OMG they totally are dreaming! The bodywork looks a complete state, I know it’s an old Defender, but that’s just rotting away. You expect a few scratches, scrapes and dings on something that’s had a working/off road life, but that’s something else!

I know that the 2002 Td5’s are in the £10-12k bracket, I guess I’ve just got to pitch it somewhere in the middle to start with probably.
 
The value of any vehicle is largely dependant on three things, condition, mileage in respect of age and desireability. Good defenders are desirable and low mileage good desirable fetch good money. Where does yours fit in this description. If it was mine I would base the sale price on what I paid for it and the condition/deteriating and extra miles since I bought it. Cars over 10 years old don't depreciate so much so if you haven't added millions of miles and the condition is still the same as when you bought it, knock two to five hundred quid off it for every year you've owned it.

2002 (52 plate) Defender 110 Td5 County spec double cab pick-up
- 167.5k miles
- Chassis & Bulkhead both solid
- Coniston green solid paint
- County pack, so has; electric windows and remote central locking
- Bluetooth radio/CD player with handsfree
- Boost alloys with General Grabber tyres (lots of tread left)
- Ifor Williams tear canopy
- Swing away rear spare wheel carrier
- LED rear lights and front indicators/side lights
- Lower sills replaced with heavy duty rock/tree sliders (the type with round tube that look like side steps but better)
- Tubular front bumper with electric winch
- Steel steering guard

Anyone got any advice on where I should be at price wise on this?

Maybe remove the ifor top, as people might think its been a farm hack and is held together with baling twine?

Im guessing 7/8k on the price?
 
Do you think that the original vinyl soft top would be better for selling it on the back rather than the aluminium Ifor top Lynall?

A picture paints a thousand words, any chance of a few photos?
 
Looks like I’ll have to dust off the old vinyl soft top cover and good sticks!! Although I do prefer the hard top for load security, however the soft top canopy has a really good classic look.

I might have to sell the Ifor hard top first due to lack of storage space.
