Cheers mate. Yes, it's still very depressing and a colossal pain in the @rse. I don't use the Landy much now because of it.
 
The vac pump wont move much air while it's connected up correctly, the inlet of the pump will be shut down so once it gets to 0psi Absolute it will just be turning over.
But if you pull the inlet pipe off and let it pull air in then it's not drastic but it's a different story, a leak in the vacuum system will change the output of the pump.
 
Bit of a bum. Have you done compression test ? And likely you have seen britannica video about the cyclone breather ?
This all started when I rebuilt the engine. Tested compression then and it was great. I've replaced the cyclone breather. I've ran it venting in to a catch can. I have had the head off and pistons back out to recheck the bores. Had the valve guides replaced, even though they were within tolerance, while head was off. I'm on to my fourth turbo and about the sixth oil return pipe.

Yes, the hope is that if the vac pump was faulty it was continuously pushing a lot more air in to the crankcase (fingers crossed emoji)

My you have been through the mill, :eek: the fact that you have had the system open to atmosphere and no better is very puzzling.:confused:
 
A bit of an update.
The Landy has only done 219 miles since I fitted the vac pump. However, it was previously using 1ml of oil per mile, so that would mean 219ml of oil would have gone. Tricky to tell on the dipstick, but I could tell when 250ml had gone and the current level doesn't look as though it's moved - early days though!
More significantly it's stopped smelling! You struggled to drive with the window down, even slightly, because of the fumes coming in. I haven't been able to smell anything. The Mrs has been using it for work again and tonight she said "I've noticed something about the Landy, it doesn't smell anymore." So, I'm getting hopeful. I need to get a lot more miles on it to see how the oil level goes, but it's looking promising. :)
