So the wife was out in the Disco today (300tdi auto) and heard a noise,like a stone hitting the engine. Everything drove fine on the way home but once parked she noticed a big oil puddle. I got under neath to have a look and have found that the vacum pump has dumped all the oil out of what i can only describe as one of the turrets on the case???
I have looked everywhere to find out what it is called. As you look at the pump from the drivers side wing there is what looks like 2 turrets with caps in on the casing,the bottom one has blown the cap out???
Any ideas??
Is this a fecked pump?,only changed it about 6 months ago.

fecked pump? yep, would say so - but if its only six months old, then it should be under warranty.

have you considered fitting an electric pump? the Ausies seem to favour them, and whilst they are dearer, they are supposed to last longer ... ??

not to my knowledge, no. just had a look at mine, and the caps, which I presume hold the one way valves in place look rolled in to the ali casting....

no wonder the Aussies favour electric.......

What was originally in that hole (Turret, your description), was a welch plug, there are two, one in each "turret", these are closures for the "poppet" type valves of the vacuum pump head. If on the slim chance you have not lost the poppet valve or spring that is enclosed in that space you could, maybe, and if you can get one, re-fit a welch plug into the pump outer head cover,cap,casing whatever it's technical term is.
Two things important to know is,1/ Why did the original one let go. 2/ You may have to drill out the cover, cap, lid rivets that fasten it to the vac pump body to successfully fit the replacement plug, and then put the bits back together using small screws and nuts, (this is a fairly routine operation, normally done to stop the oil leaks that occur at the body joint of the pump assembly), we've all done it who own Tdi's.
If the above operation is successful it will save you a bit of dosh.
Disco1, never heard of your electric vacuum pump replacement here in Australia, only electric lift/fuel pump as replacement for the mech lift pump.

Thanks for the more technical explanation of the issue too - I actually wondered if he could make a good pump out of the old and the damaged too...

I seem to remember reading some where that people have fitted the VW/Audi electric vac pumps but not sure where i read it.

Thanks for all the reply's. I have sourced a second hand pump from a local dealer. As for the question why did it let go, "Britoart". That could be the simple answer!

Thanks for the "heads up" on that electric vac pump Disco1BFG, you are right I was unable to access the site but as someone else has indicated they may also be on other diesels now as well, I've just never heard of them. I live in a remote part of our big country, the LROCV in Victoria is at least 4,000k from here, we miss out on a lot of stuff that is being done/developed elsewhere.
Currently looking at electric axial flow engine coolant pumps though.
Hoopfish, glad you got sorted, that item can be really expensive to replace, I collect any parts that are being discarded by others and fix them if they can be fixed, makes my old Tdi very cheap to run.

Yep, 4K Km is definitely remote !! but... we are remote,in a UK sort of way, and love it!

The vac pump which runs the cruise control on my D1 is electric too... so I was going to replace them both with a larger lectric one and a tank when the engine driven one dies.

Like your philosophy of collecting and re-using stuff too - can't do that with the modern 'puterised carp
