maybe some more info would help the overall diagnosis.
I'm also only geting about 7 mpg round town and 9 on a run.
I don't think it is pulling very well. We'll not like a V8
Engine runs sweet at idle and does missfire at all.
Runs same on petrol or gas.
Noise only occurs when under load, if you rev up steady its fine
Had a full service About 800miles ago oil, filters, plugs. Although i didn't gap the plugs (NGK)

Something very wrong in there!! my 3.9 gives double those figures and then some. Check that the AFM is set properly, connect multimeter across CO trim and ground, should be a reading of 1.0v - 1.5v ( I run mine at about 1.2/1.3v - are your plugs a sooty black colour? Is there any smoke from exhaust?

The only time I had consumption in that sort of range was when my ECU stppoed reading teh AFM and ran rich all the time but diagnostics showed no faults. It might be worth trying a substitute AFM and ECU.

If it isn't something to do with the timing/injection I wonder if your camshaft is worn?

thanks for the reply again!!
When i changed plugs they were a nice nutty brown. no smoke at all ever.
Were is the c0 adjust an where do i check the volts.
Thanks again

If plugs nice light brown suggest mixture O.K. but for future reference the CO trim is under the "tamper proof" cover (assuming a Lucas 3 AM meter). I can't remember the colours of the wires off the top of my head, sensor ground is easy to check - set meter to continuity and test against ground (take off the plug first). With ignition on, check for 12v which is the supply, the remaining two wires will be CO trim and the sensing wire. Don't quote me on this but I think CO Trim is a blue wire with a red trace.

had another look and i think the exhaust manifold gasket is blowing slightly on the near side bank which would cause the noise i'm sure but why would the noise be reduced if i retard the timing??

Has any one else had experience of exhaust manifolds blowing and making a clatter ing / taping noise like pinging.
it happens only when the enigine is under load. If i adust the timing the noise gets better and or worse dependant on if i retard / advance the engine...
Any input would be interesting

Dear God .... Bless his pistons, and when they melt, don't let them wreck every part of his engine ....

Amen.

Yes indeed, and when I had my garage and was servicing cars, one of the first things we had to find out was if the vacuum pipe was to be ON or OFF when the timing was being set using the strobe on the running engine.

I still have that strobe. Lovely bit of kit. And the Snap-On cam dwell and RPM meter. Hey, I don't need them. How much would they be worth?

Don't sell them CharlesY, you might get the hankering for an old series Landy with a petrol engine.....................................then again?

Hi Dave, you're right of course ... and there's one sitting here right now, "The Pink Fink".

I daren't even think about it or I will end up making it go again ...

I wonder if anyone would like this ... 2.25 petrol, I have a 2.5NA diesel sitting to put in it.
