Hi,

new to land rovers, have a 6 cylider bmw m tec touring that affords me 25 to 30mpg.

I am looking around at 90's and disco's and as much as the sensible way would imply the 200 or 300Tdi's i am a petrol head, even after all of these years and am forever looking at the V8's.

Is the injection models much better than the carbd versions

What would i expect to the gallon with a V8, round the doors and on a 60mph run.

With gas round the doors and on a run, is there much maintenance of the gas sytem required?

I am looking at 10 to 15K miles a year and have other toys to get me about when the weather isn't inclement or i don't want to hit the green lanes.

Any advise?
 
I would say between 15 and 20MPG. All depends upon service schedule, age / mileage of engine and how its driven.
 
I average 20MPG with my 4.6HSE. On a steady run it will reach 24mpg and at 65mph with cruise control on it will even go above this. Runs only on Petrol. No gas thanks.

It is slightly modified though.:)
 
I get around 20MPG as an average with mixed driving. But dont forget that these vehicles weigh quite a bit and have the aerodynamics of a brick.

Careful driving in carpets slippers is the reason for the good economy - Plus he has to go steady so he doesnt spill his gin......:D
 
Realisticly around 18mpg average. My Discovery now has a 4.6 and while running in we managed up to 22mpg, now it does a bit less, that loud pedal is too tempting even for my wife.
 
If you have to think about how much juice it uses, don't buy a V8!!

As already said, expect about 18MPG (for a good one). Driven hard, 8 - 10MPG is realistic, moderate driving 12 - 15MPG. Driven lightly you could see as much as 22 - 24MPG. I have no idea about gas although it does appear to cause a few problems with V8 motors if the system is not 110%.

As Kev says, if you thinking about how bad it can be then get a fuel of the devil diesel, i had a 200 and a 300 tdi and they both just did around 30 to the gallon and went on forever (with servicing).

I have a V8 on lpg and i love it....just! (it has just killed the engine at 102,000 miles) but if i had to have diesel anything it would be the 200, 300 or td5.

As the disco 1 & 2 fuel comsumption can only be measure by the average if you have and average of 8 to 10mpg then there's something wrong.

The last time I checked my average five years or so ago it was 18mpg just running around and 20mpg, and on a 200mile run via A and M roads up to North Yourshire.
My old RR 3.5 averaged 16mpg anywhere, and my 1985 TVR was averaging 15mpg anywhere for the two years I had it.

My busness partner has an XK8 with a "real time" display that sometimes shows 8mpg but that only when doing 150mph and he excelerates :D

I used to average 14-15 on LPG on the 4.0, the 4.6 is doing just over 16mpg.
 
i have a 3.5 with 33" tyres and it ****e (read: painful)

ive never run one on stock tyres but i bet its better.

mine just uses far too much so im biased :(
 
I am getting about 10mpg as I have disconnected the MAF got one ordered so should be here mon or tue.
 
I get around 12-15mpg from my RRC V8 (3.9i V8), which is toolling around, generally driven moderately with the odd lead-foot moment!!

Don't know what it will do on a run as I use my economical alternative - a BMW 330Ci :)

And use the bike in the summer? I have got a TRE mod for your bike if interested? I had the same bike but in blue and White loved it to pieces

Absolutely! Range Rover in bad weather, bike in good weather, BMW rest of the time!

What's a TRE mod?
 
Suzuki restrict there bikes in 1,2,3 to stop people flipping them. This is why they don't like to wheelie. It's a Timing Retard Elimantor makes a big difference it tells the ECU it's in 6th gear so you have full power from the start. It just plugs in under L/H fairing so no cutting of wires.
