Hi I've a 2000 disco v8 with lpg I've started to get tapping noise on acceleration only from os rear of engine I'm just about to change offside manifold gaskets to see if this helps .but I've also seen several postings about lifters being gunked up and running with semi synthetic Diesel oil will help this and is better for the v8 engine . Can anyone confirm this . And would I still just keep the normal engine oil filter or would I have to use a diesel filter . If there is a different one that is . Many thanks guys . Bob

I'd say it's valve stems mate. Lpg doesn't have the lubricating qualities of petrol and rover v8 valve stems are notoriously vulnerable on gas. When I bought my classic range rover it was a non runner, being lpg converted it didn't take long to find the cause. No compression on 2 cylinders, turned out to be exhaust valves on both cylinders. Luckily the parts are cheap, I replaced all 16 valves with genuine LR parts all on cost about £140 and took me 3 days, lapping valves on my living room floor :)

In you tapping sounds like a machine gun when under load then it could be the manifold to Y pipe gasket blown which could be difficult to see.

As diesel specific oil is a detergent oil then it would clean any engine that is "gunked" up, if u find that due to the lack of regulation oil changes your is and u feel u need to use the stuff your existing oil filler will be fine.

As well on the oil side of things I remember looking into this for my Range Rover and ended up sticking to 10-40w mineral oil I can't remember the exacts why but I think the general consensus was that with it being an old design it was better to use the 10-40w

I always use diesel oil in everything, 10/40 mineral or semi synth. I buy it in drums, and it goes in the 90,V8 Disco, Clio, tractor, wifes petrol Yaris, even the mower and garden rotovator.

Been doing this over 25 years, never done any harm that I know of.

Perhaps you should look at this link in the bit about flushing oil.
Then decide if using a diesel specific engine oil long term or even just as a flushing oil in a petrol engine, especially if its got a few miles under the belt, is a good idea. Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible

We've used Chevron Supreme 10W-40 diesel oil in our V8's since we did the rebuild in ours and our son swapped his engine in his.

Ours has done nearly75000 miles on it and has had no issues, our son's has done 12000 miles with no problems.

Many large mixed fleets operate on the one oil as a matter of policy, and diesel is probably the better oil out of the two.

Semi-synthetic is as good as fully synthetic in this application, no need to overspend on synthetic.

Flushing oil is a complete waste of time and money, if you think your engine is dirty inside, use the oil you usually use , and change it, and the filter, again after a few hundred miles.

Hi just stuck some wynns hydraulic lifter in 10 miles later noise gone now put some decent oil in many thanks for the pointers . Really forgot how good the v8 sounds . That's me back in love again with it . Lol . Bob
