So Martin, if I have a '97 4.6 how can I tell whether it's a WYF? Confess am occasionally concerned about the slippage issue.

Also, it has to be said, most threads on here are regarding the diesel lump - or is that just because there's more around in the vehicle parc?

There will be a serial number on the side of the block (just above where the sump meets the block). Pretty sure yours will be a WYF (West Yorkshire Foundry) being a Gems. Pretty sure the LCF blocks were the last 3-4 years of the rover V8 production. There's cases of all 94mm bore V8's slipping liners, just appears to be the later blocks that give the most trouble.

Thanks, Martin for your help and the link which I found a very interesting read.
My engines a bit tappetty when hot which I have always thought that it was more valve gear related and it does fade in and out at idle. I have no further issues with engine, coolant loss, temp etc and it's been the same since I bought it some 17 months ago.

I run a V8 and I've had excellent support on here, also in engine-specific cases. I think you're right though - there were probably more diesels made than petrols, and certainly more of them running today.

Most of the petrols were scrapped as uneconomical. The scrappies are full of them with nothing wrong that a little TLC wouldn't cure. Criminal.

The 4.0 ajv8 is a glorious engine! And it's fine on lpg. Better off it but aren't they all lol if one would fit Id do it without a moments hesitation.

Side note I just measured up and Id like to bet the 2.7 twin Turbo Lion engine from the s-Type and xj would drop in nicely. Safe bet that the newer 3.0l from the XJ and XF would also. Just a thought lol

Mine's the 4.0. Sure someone said LPG wore something out on them. Think the 3.0 would be too small. In fact the 4.0 would be pushing it. Should fit space-wise?

The 4.0 jag lump would be perfect. the rover 4.6 litre v8 only makes 220bhp and 280 lb ft of torque! The 4.0 jag lump turns out 290bhp at 320lb ft of torque and at a lower rpm!! The jag unit uses less fuel under a similarload, is considerably smoother and infinitely more reliable.

Newer technology I guess.

Well, when the S-type rots I'll have to get it in the Rangie somehow. Never tried anything like that before so I'll need a How To. So, how are you going to do it?!

My Rangie has a manual box too. How I'll mate that up is a mystery to me.

get an adaptor milled to mate the boxes Id imagine. We put a suzuki engine in a mini once and had a flywheel made to mate them up

I had the pleasure of visiting Turner Engineering a few months ago to make a delivery, very nice set up and more P38 Range Rover engines than you can shake a dry dip stick at !
Have a look at their website, you can start getting your shopping list together in case you decide to to buy a V8 :)

Find a decent Thor 4.6 that has had a top-hat liner engine fitted and pay a little more for it. I don't see the point of a luxury SUV with a tractor engine in it.
