How long does it take for the 300tdi to get up to temp?

Reason I ask is because I'm thinking of getting a disco so I can play at the weekends but it will need to get me to and from work. My work trip is only 4.5miles each way through the town. When I use my wifes TDCI mondeo I get about 10mpg less than normal because it only just gets hot as I arive to work. Petrols generally heat up faster that deisels so I'm wondering if there will be much differance in daily costs between an LPG V8 & 300TDI?

I know the V8 will cost more when I'm playing but I can deal with that:)

if youre getting 10 mpg less than your wife on a mondeo what do you expect to get from a v8 on short runs?

I used my disco once for a month to drive to the station 3 miles there and 3 miles back in the evening for five days a week and the average mpg was 13mpg.
There was heat through the vents within 1/2 to one mile, this was in October.

My disco doesn't run on bar-b-q gas and never will :)

Cheers guys

I drive a 300BHP nissan 200sx at the mo and I get about 14mpg out of that when driving gingerly and it's only mapped for for super plus (reg unleaded caused det) so I'm used to big fuel bills but it is well warmed up after 1/2 mile of driving and the oil temp is reasonable after about 2 miles. I'm sure if it didn't warm up so quick it would be les than 10mpg and it's definatly less than 10mpg if I used the loud pedal.

I'm expecting my first child and the Nissan is not a very practical daily driver so it's time for a change of hobby. I've done a bit of research and disco's seem to offer good value for money in terms of off road performance vs road driving. I may be used to big fuel bills but I still want to spend my money on the right thing. I don't have much experiance in the 4x4 world but I have been part of the motor trade for years and deisels tend to cost more to maintain and don't like lots of short journeys. In my experiance deisels are only cheeper over longer journeys when they can reach optimum efficancy.

Just about every deisel I've driven has taken ages to warm up when driving round the town causing poor mpg (and cold feet in this weather). Incidently this driving style causes particulate filters in modern deisels to clog and these are expensive to replace, can't see a 300tdi having a particulate filter though

LPG seams to be about 50p per ltr cheeper than deisel as well and there seems to be quite a few come up for sale

I picked up my V8 Disco yesterday. Absolutely love it and the sound of it woofling away sitting on the drive more than compensates for any increased fuel consumption over the diesel. It warms up very quickly and the seat heaters are pretty good too. Its a 2003 and cost significantly less than the equivalent diesel. I've had numerous diesels of different manufacturers, none come close to a V8. You only live once.

V8's are great - til you wade thro a river then they are not so great and suddenly you see why most 4x4 are diesel

Not a problem if you follow Land Rovers depth recommendations when wading as most owners do, but every vehicle has limitations even diesel engine ones.

Unless you've got megasquirt, then you'll be going through the water like a Polaris missile!

I use my TD5 everyday. My journey to work is 45 miles there and 45 miles back. In this weather it does take a while to warm up. but having had a V8 rangerover a few years ago the fuel bill for the td5 is a lot less. Still fookling huge but less. I was all up for another V8 until I did my sums and decided It would cost about £25.00 per day to get to work.. not a viable idea on my income. TD5 it was. Great machine in all respects.

It's getting to the point that a petrol vehicle may be cheaper to run than a diesel. 129.9/litre for diesel, 123.9/ for petrol. If the difference between diesel/petrol widens further then that could be the case.

Petrol is 118.9 locally to me it was 114.9 four weeks ago, haven't a clue what diesel costs.

I recently got rid of a lwb shogun V6 petrol auto to get a discovery 300tdi auto. It cost me £40 in petrol to go to work and back(20mpg). The disco is getting about 22-25mpg but because diesel is more expensive I still have to put about £40 in!

Given the cost of diesel now you've gotta do starship mileage to get the benefit, got rid of my diesel Shogun (£400 a year tax) and got me a V8 and stripped and re-built it and it sounds sweet!

Just done some maths and with following I found the V8 to cost slightly more

Petrol £1.23 per liter
Diesel £1.27 per liter

On a 40 mile run the …

TDI getting 25 mpg will use 7 liters
V8 getting 20mpg will use 9 liters

So the V8 would cost an extra £2.18

That sound about right ??
