I have noticed my 300TDI is gutless up hills (bad when you live in the mountains) and lacks power for acceleration. Do I go for a tune up, new turbo, new intercooler etc on my existing, low milage good condition 300tdi; or do I go for a V8 conversion? What are the pro's and cons?

thats useful thanks. I was thinking i would need to spend loads of money on tuning or even an engine change when, all i really need is a re-spray. Thank god for Landyzone! I would have thrown my money away if it wasn't for such sage advice.

it would be worthwhile checking pump timing and valve clearances etc also a worn and ineficient lift pump will give low power ,, also worth changing fuel filters return pipe etc while your checking these things give all turbo and intercooler hoses a check as a small leak there will give drastic losses of performance etc ! if your vehicle is used to traverse mountains etc then try using low ratio in g/box ???

The garage I use here has suggested I bring it in for a load of tests. he is convinced with the right tuning and an alisport intercooler, oh and a new turbo with bigger injectors; I could achieve more power.

Low miles and good condition you say. OK, I'll swap you my V8.

Seriously though, whats the fuel costs like in Austria? I get 130 miles to £50.

average is 1 euro a liter (for diesel) . not cheep, especially when its all bloody hills

Hehe...makes the uk look very expensive....which it is...:(.

I'd stick with a diesel....theres a limit on how fast you can go up anyway with various stuff coming down at warp factor 8...those Austrian passes are spectacular, although lethal!

An older 3.5 litre V8 on carbs isn't going to give you a massive improvement on performance, but you'll take a massive hit on running costs.

A 3.9 with megasquirt might be worthwhile, but could be expensive.

I would suggest you take the advice here, EGR blanking plate and tune up your fuel injection as BoB suggested. Maybe fit a K&N air filter and make sure it's well serviced.
