I have just bought an unfinished comp truck with a v8 in, my plans were to pull the v8 out and stick a 300tdi in but im being told im making a mistake (i personally disagree) looking around most are using tdis, i will mainly be trialing, play days, green laning, its got 35" fedimas and ashcroft axels (arbs, shafts and cvs) unsure on gearbox/transfer box etc, its a 100" trayback with front and rear 8274 winches just to give an idea on weight..

Willing to listen to all pros and cons, thanks
 
If you only using for fun keep the v8 for the hasstle of swoping to a derv , v8 got more power will use more fuel but saves on buy a 300tdi engine cant see a reason for not having a c8 personally
 
Trialling a Good cond V8!, (note not some cammed up old spunky engine just a goodun)
Challenge lots of water V8 with megasquirt, (As above)


Diesel for cheap fun if your thinking Auto then DEFO V8 unless you want a Mooing Cow!

Megasquirt the v8, second hand kit off eBay for a big saving on new. Then you dont need to worry about waterproofing issues other than axles and a snorkel.
 
Challenge truck I'd use a decent rebuilt rover V8, 4 speed manual bullet proof box modify the difflock to a solid lever instead of the vacum unit and the rest you have except Ashcroft over ARB's as a preference
 
I have 3 real engine choices at the moment without buying anymore, 3.5v8 300tdi and 200tdi, there will be one trial a month, numerous play days which will involve deep water, the rest green laning unless i decide to do a winch challenge, i dont want auto its got to be manual.

Yes but the noise is a pleasant by product of complete drivability. seriously steep hill climbs in 3rd low are very easy whereas 2nd in a diesel and you run out of revs halfway up. being able to pull down to 600Rpm without it stalling is worth it all day long a diesel will hit 750 and then die and have Zero grunt to get the revs back up. But they are waterproof no mesisng they are cheap but a v8 theyre not
