P.S. I took that video to my local LR specialist and he said he was pretty sure that lead would cause the sort of problem I've been getting... What are your thoughts?

he probably wanted to shut you up so he could go home
:p

all those ign bits need to be genuine LR not just lucus or anything else and the only other brand is magnecore for the leads

haha... They're Lumenition leads which I've always been told are pretty good and reliable :confused2:

Well, driving back from a seminar today, rolled down the window at the lights and heard two, maybe three cylinders firing. Had to keep the accelerator down to keep the engine going, all the while the car sounded like a 1960's four cylinder running for the first time in years. Bad smell coming from the engine, though in my panic I didn't catalogue the smell in my memory so unfortunately I couldn't explain it to you now. I just remember it smelled bad. People were staring at my car it sounded/smelled so bad!

Drove it to the nearest LR garage which is about three or four miles. Could hardly pull uphill in fourth gear, bumping back and forth all the way. Had to run it in third gear most of the way but sometimes even in second it was struggling to pull.

Dumped it at the garage and explained to the guy that if I can't leave it there I'd have to get a tow truck to take it away, which he understood.

So car's fooked. Hopefully it's nothing serious, like a dead coil/dizzy cap or something, but it certainly felt serious. Perfect way to cap off a crap week :).

Sounds like it desparately needs someone to read the codes first, before randomly pulling stuff n replacing it.
There's SO many things it COULD be, but I fear ya gonna be ****in in the wind until you or a garage run through the issue systematically.

...having said all that tho, sounds like the distributor is not doing what it should. leccy module breakdown, wiring and connectors going brittle and breaking up would cause those seemingly random running issues. Would try taking out the dizzy n replacing with new (bout £100 worth) or a proven used unit.

codes read first could potentially save the costs of needlessly replacing bits tho....just in case it isnt the dizzy!

thats why I drive a trooper and a bmw as dailys and keep my landy for a hobby!

I was lookin at an 850 for a steal price the other day.....tho had problems getting in an out of it, n nearly shat meself when they quoted me fookin hilarious

nice car, 850 is a bit under powered for the extra litre and very unreliable and bits whoo. throttle stepper- £380 pounds plus vat and fitting in 2001 thnk you sir

The 840 is more or less the same in performance but much tougher and more reliable.

however the 850CSI is a 380 bhp beast and I wouldnt mind a go in one of those, a nineties monster :D

My rad is leaking, getting steadily worse. Is it possible that the leaking coolant could be getting blown onto the dizzy cap by the fan then buggering up eveything inside?

I have left it at a garage, it was bordering on undrivable today. We'll see what they say

possible

it would have to soak it more than a big puddle/fjord would. you would see it soaking

yes, an 850csi....looked tired tho....like it would iminently need more than just a stepper

I have one, it is a great car.. ;)

If there was a significant EFI fault, the EFI warning light should be on (assuming it has one and the bulb is actually in place!). As fett said earlier the ignition parts need to be genuine not pattern. It might be worthwhile having the ECU read for fault codes but I would strongly suggest taking the pain and buying genuine dizzy cap and rotor arm - Lucas, nothing else will do.

The only other thought is your coil. An iffy coil could cause both injection and ignition faults. Try swapping with a known good coil and see what happens; do check the condition of the L.T. wiring though, look carefully at the spade connectors - they corrode and wires break.
