Hi all, Im new to this forum and my interest (one of them) lies in series landies which I use for work and general carting stuff about!

What Id like to know is whether a land rover V8 engine will work with a series gearbox? Having only run landies with their original engines (2 1/4 petrols and diesels) I have never done any engine swaps.

Do the V8 models use the same box and propshafts or do they need different gearing because of the power difference. Also can a 2 1/4 petrol lump be swapped for a V8 without serious probs?

i'd like to know the answer too.i'm not sure what gearbox i have as my series 3 was converted from a 2 1/4 petrol to a v8 using a rover p5b engine.
 
Dont quote me on this as im no expert.

But I think most conversions use the standard series Gearbox, with an adaptor plate to mate the bellhousing to the GB, sometimes they need a different Flywheel or Clutch. Not sure but think the GB or Engine sometimes need to be moved, depending on the conversion, but sometimes the conversion kit comes with mounts that bolt to the excisting engine mounts, so no Welding is needed.
 
Adapter plate, engine mounts and some machining of the engine output shaft (to shorten it I seem to remember?) are the main bits. you'll need the fuel pump & depending on what V8 you use you might want to re-site the oil filter as usually it's very low down and vulnerable. You can mate the V8 exhaust to the series one.

It's a pretty straight forward conversion (though I have to admit I didn't do mine, it came like it!) & there's a lot on the t'internet to help you along.

Give some thought to throttle control as mine has a cam on the end of the series throttle bar in the engine bay. It's not really large enough so even increasing the throttle pedal travel I can only use about 3/4 throttle. That's enough to get to 90MPH plus mind, so it'll do!

Oh, to which, make sure you give your brakes a thorough overhaul!

Lastly, contrary to popular belief, V8's don't eat series gearboxes for breakfast, so long as your box is in good nick to start with & you go a bit easy. I still burn kiddies in their Mums hatchbacks off at the lights on occasions, cos, well, you just have to don't you? :D
 
If you use an SDI flywheel it requires no modification as opposed to a Range Rover which needs to be drilled,tapped and dowelled to suit Land Rover 91/2" cover .
The bulkhead will also need modification .Dont forget fit a fuel spill return line to tank,dispense with the voltage regulator ,do away with the oil bath
filter and figure where you're going to put the battery.
You wil also need a bush to fit on the gearbox spigot shaft,shorten the original crankshaft spigot etc.
There are of course Companies out there that specialise in this and various other engine conversions .
It is not a simple bolt off bolt on replacement job.
That's all I can remember.

I'd change to RR diffs too. If mine didn't have them it'd be revving it's nuts off!

You'll need a leccy fan too. Mine's off a Mondeo & fits pretty well. Daft did a tidy job wiv one off a.................er, what was it..........Froggy motor weren't it?
