Hi Gents, I'm looking for some advice and banter (of course) I am a very proud owner of a 1988 Land Rover 90 2.5 petrol/LPG pictures of which are in the introduce yourself section. I'm now at the 'mods' & 'tweaks' stage and I'm seriously thinking of replacing the 2.5 petrol engine with a V8 as I love that sweet sound it produces and also just that bit more power for offloading etc. Do you guys think this would be a worth while conversion and how much work would be involved in doing so? Many thanks in advance, Wayne.

You've got a whatty?...on LPG??... and you want to .....errr.....errmmm

do you REALLY need to ask????????!!!!

Or, put your question another way;
"I've got a turd on a string. Should I swap it for a diamond"?

LMAO

when asked v8 good idea the answer is always yes :D

thats how I ended up with 4 last year :D

Hahahaha quality and point well and truly taken....V8 it is then lads!

Is there a lot of work invoked on the conversion? I know I need to change the gearbox etc but how hard is the actual install, do I need to change mounts etc?

your best bet is to sell your series and buy a v8 2 door range rover from the 70's, up to 72 they are tax free of course :D

If your in the mood for a project, why not start with a V8 Disco and do a body swap. There are some great donors out there and 100" is not a bad length as-is.
As a price guide, my 1999 V8 with good running gear and a good body with 12 months MOT is only worth £1,500 in today's market. You should pick-up on with a rotten body for less than half that.
Go for it! That V8 burble is magic.

Wayne. There's lots of complete cars out there that are real bargains plus you get the chance to check the engine running if its still in a vehicle.
When I broke m last engine in the bobtail (one in the avatar) I replaced it with a late serpentine type V8 out of a Disco. If you can find one, go for a serp type..
There's a few improvements made with the later serp engines, mainly improved oil pump and a far better single serp flat ribbed belt, rather than multiple v belts of earlier engines. The last softdash Range Rover Classics and Discos from 95-96 have those serp engines....incidentally, its a belt system that was developed n preferred by the racers n hotrodders. Not that its strictly relevant, but its not a bad thing.!

To further whet your appetite for a sweet sounding engine, have a look at this... (it's piggin awesome!)

cheers

Not sure, what's the going rate? Done 137k and I've been driving it for about 500 and it goes well. Got a leaky front crank oil seal/or timing case gasket but that's all

Where you at wayne? Theres 2 rotbox v8 discos in malvern for sale. Not what i want. Wrong thread i know cos i want a tdi. Think ones 900 with lpg kit

Hi Chunky, I have an auto disco 300 tdi ES complete apart from axles and wheels. Only has 103000 miles, I'm thinking dismantling and selling all parts etc or I would def sell as one unit if poss ;)

HIi,just to complicate the issue and I know this is the "it's a v8" section but have a think about BMW 2.8. I'll probably get some stick for suggesting it on here and I must say I do like SWB V8's having built and owned a few. However I used to work at TMS when they were building Litchfields fitting Chev and TVR engines, the boss had a 50th 4.0 defender and a 90 that we took the 2.5 out of and fitted a 4.5 TVR but then he purchased a South African built 90 CSW with the 2.8 and OMG it would eat the other two, we fitted a high ratio xfer box and then the bloody thing did 90 in 3rd. everybody at the dealership that drove it came back smiling with comments like "it's the fastest most unstable thing I have ever driven" LOL
The bell housing looked to be the same as a RR 2.5 dse so I would imagine all the required parts would be available.

Just another option, either engine would be great though andgood luck with the conversion if you go ahead.
